I’m sure you have seen a photo of Yayoi Kusama’s black-polka-dot-clad yellow squash sculpture sitting seaside at Naojima, Japan. And you’re probably not a stranger to her style of endless dotting pattern intermixed with bright colors.

2012 is the year of Yayoi Kusama in the US and in Europe. I found out that there was a Yayoi Kusama retrospective show at Tate Modern at the beginning of the year. Completely excited, I almost flew to London just to see the show. But then after a couple months, I found out that Kusama was collaborating with Louis Vuitton to launch a complete collection that was launching in New York in the summer. Along with this limited edition line, the retrospective that was on exhibit at Tate Modern was going to travel across the Atlantic to come to New York as well. I couldn’t be MORE excited.

Marc Jacobs, Creative Director of Louis Vuitton, had a meeting with Yayoi Kusama for the first time in 2006. He was captivated by her on the spot and utterly impressed by the innocent air about her work. Back in the 60s, Yayoi Kusama was almost as famous as Andy Warhol in New York. She was also extremely active in the fashion world, launched her own line in 1968 and was crowned the polka-dot princess by the press. But what most people don’t know is that the now 83 year old Kusama has been suffering from hallucinations her entire life since her teen years. She would often see the world in bright contrasty colors with dots and squiggly shapes all over. However, this illness also helped developed her world-famous style and aesthetics in a huge way. While she was in New York, her work earned much admiration, but the death of her best friend set her into severe depression. By 1973, she decided to move back to Japan permanently to live in an institution (she still lives there). After building a large studio close to the institution, she never stopped producing new work. And this year, with thoughtful planning by Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton, Kusama returns to the fashion scene after almost half a century with a full collaborated collection of bags, shoes and ready-to-wear pieces.

On July 10th, two Louis Vuitton x Kusama pop-up store opened their doors in New York’s fifth avenue flagship and the Soho location. The openings attracted a large number of celebrities, New Yorkers and tourists. Kusama’s famous dots covered the entire building on fifth avenue, the windows have also been dressed with conceptual installations. Of course, in the store, you could view the entire Louis Vuitton x Kusama collection, but the prices are sky high. Most people, including me, were looking at these pieces as art, and I’m sure the ones that bought the pieces will treasure them as art as well. There will be a total of 8 pop-up store around the world, besides the two in New York, there will be two in Japan (Shinjuku and Ginza), one in Hong Kong, one in Singapore and the last two will open in August in Paris and London.

Arriving in New York alongside the Louis Vuitton collection, and what got me really excited, was the retrospective that is now on exhibition at Whitney Museum. Besides a dedicated space that told a story about her 60s wild bohemia life in New York, the show includes her work from different decades showcasing different sensibility.

The exhibition showcase the pieces from Yayoi Kusama’s entire life as an artist, for people who aren’t familiar with Kusama, this is an excellent exhibition. What’s unique about Kusama’s work is how lively and energetic they are, any one who’s seen them would probably imagine an outgoing person behind the work. Not many could link her quiet nature to her work. But, as proven many times in the the history of art, the introverted artists often have really complex layers of emotions that are expressed explicitly in their work. Kusama definitely belongs in this group.

This complete collection also includes the sparkly-in-the-dark installation, Fireflies.

The last Yayoi Kusama exhibition in New York this summer would be the outdoor installation sponsored by Whitney Museum, Gagosian and the Hudson River Park Trust located at Pier 45. As you can see, Kusama visited the installation when she came to the opening of the exhibitions. The bright red, polka-dot-clad irregular shaped sculptures covered the entire grass field in the park, what a beautiful sight this would be on a sunny day and it’s definitely not to be missed.

Manhattan has been invaded by the dots of Yayoi Kusama again in the summer of 2012, and she made the New Yorkers who have forgotten about her completely in awe of her brilliance.

Hello, San Francisco! Part 2

New York Raves No.8

In the previous post, I introduced the fashionable Clift hotel, and now I’m gonna take you through my journey as a tourist at the gorgeous bay city.

New York Raves No.8

Our first stop is the infamous independent bookstore – City Light. This was the hot spot in the 50s for the Beatniks and the birth place for the Beat Generation. This genre of literature is usually referred to as The Beats and is centered around the work of Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. This wave of thoughts capsulized free-will, self-inspired creativity, and the will to refuse conformity with society. City Light was on our must-visit list simply because we wanted to visit the place that made history and created impact to American literature. We get to experience being inside of the bookstore, reading and flipping through poetry in a mellow and relaxing environment.

After our short trip to the bookstore, we walked through Chinatown and window-shopped all the way back to the hotel. After a change of clothes, we headed out to Bar Tartine for dinner. I’m sure many of you have heard of the famed Tartine Bakery, yup, Bar Tartine is its sister restaurant! All of the dishes here are innovative and fully incorporated the local and seasonal ingredients. We ordered a few types of pickles, definitely my first time having carrot and beet pickles that aren’t bitter or overtly earthy. Our braised short rib and seared fish entrees are both delicious as well. And of course, the bread basket is filled with freshly baked bread from Tartine Bakery, if you have no time to visit Tartine Bakery, you get to taste the deliciousness here. After a satisfying dinner, we went back to the hotel for some R&R to prepare for all the things we want to do in the next two days.

There are a large number of Cantonese immigrants in San Francisco, so the Dim Sum here is known for its authenticity, and of course we had to try it! We picked the pricier but really highly recommended Yank Sing. As a true-dumpling lover, I ordered a table full of different dumplings, and my better-half ordered his favorite, soup dumplings. Along with blanched choy sum, this meal was incredibly fulfilling. And I personally recommend the snow pea shoot steamed dumplings, they were truly delicate and tasty.

After Yank Sing, we walked a few blocks to the Ferry Building. This gourmet heaven located right by the Bay Bridge has a incredible farmer’s market every Saturday. If you know how much I LOVE farmer’s market, you could probably imagine how excited I was to be able to walk in it, touch and smell everything. I literally wished I could pack up all of the fresh ingredients and take them home to New York. Especially the fresh Lion’s Mane mushroom that I’ve never seen in New York, as well as cone-shaped young cabbage.

New York Raves No.8

The Ferry building is also a central location for great eats and shopping. To name some, Far West Fungi is a specialized mushroom store that sells double digit variety of mushrooms, Pepples make really delicious vegan donuts, an amazing homemade scone stand, ACME bakery, Italian sausage specialty store, Happy Girl Kitchen Co. with their amazing pickles and kimchi, Heath Ceramics with their sturdy and minimalist dinnerware, the west coast popular pastry store, Miette, and I even saw a stand selling Chinese tea eggs! We truly enjoyed walking through the entire hall and got a kick out of being tourists.

In the afternoon, we took the Bart to get to the Mission district. First stop at Mission was the one and only Four Barrel cafe, for half an hour of rest and some quality time to sip on their house-roasted coffee. I was also pleasantly surprised by the small-batch chocolate from Dandelion Chocolate, and yes, it went really well with the coffee.

Besides the incredible graffitis on the walls in the Mission, this entire district is filled with stylish boutiques. I love the unique garments and accessories from Voyager, adored the lovely toys from Paxton Gate, drooled over the bikes and accessories at Mission Bicycle Company, discovered one-of-a-kind home wares at Aldea, including Forage Ties, which I’ve written about before, and met the pet cock at beekeeping specialty store, Her Majesty’s Secret Beekeeper. All I can say is we had too little time for such an area, but I vow to return in the future.

New York Raves No.8

After leaving Mission, we stopped by Samovar for dinner. Samovar is a relaxing teahouse that also focused on serving healthy and vegan bites. We were both astounded by the quality and large variety of tea they serve and how tasty our dinner was. It’s a definite must-return spot and if I lived in SF, this would definitely be one of my go-to spots for tea and some light and healthy bites.

New York Raves No.8

Post dinner dessert had to be Smitten, a tiny ice cream shop that serves instant-freeze ice cream. Using the techniques from molecular gastronomy, all of Smitten’s ice cream is made to order, it’s amazing fun to watch. The ice cream are good and for anyone who’s never tried it, it’s a must. Smitten is located in Hayes Valley, an area that boasts boutique shops, art galleries and quality restaurants. There is also an outdoor Biergarten for beer-tasting and some fun time with friends. This is definitely an area that’s worth spending your time at, another area that I must return in the future.

Sunday was our half working day, but we still squeezed in a good Burmese lunch at B Star Bar. I picked this place because I was curious about their famous tea leaf salad. I have to say, both the tea leaf salad and cinnamon sugar platha were incredible. For all of you who’s never had a Burmese tea leaf salad, please note that the spicy level on this salad is quite high.

我們會再回來的, 謝謝你, 舊金山, for a great adventure。

After lunch and a short stroll at Golden Gate Park, we went to our work meeting and packed our stuff for our flight back to New York. This SF trip was a whirlwind and too short, next time we would spend more days on a trip so we get to meet up with all our friends in Cali. We shall return, San Francisco, thanks for a great adventure!

Hello, San Francisco! Part 1

New York Raves No.7

We took a mini vacation in San Francisco in the early Spring. The last time I was really playing a tourist in San Francisco was probably 20 years ago. I was still a little girl, with my family, with not a word of English, following the tour guide around. Thanks to work, we got to steal a tiny weekend trip to the west coast. After some research and planning of the things I wanted to see and eat, we took off for the bay area. We also totally got lucky with the weather, it was probably the most sunny and warm weekend San Fran has seen in months! Even the locals told us we lucked out, and they probably only have 15 super nice days in a year, and we got to experience 2 of them.

New York Raves No.7

Before going on any trip, the one thing I care about the most is the hotel. While doing my research, I came across Clift hotel, which belongs to the trendy Morgans Hotel Group. I know of the Morgans Hotel Group because of their two beautiful locations in New York, Hudson Hotel and Mondrian Hotel. So to see that they have a hotel in San Francisco as well, I decided to make a reservation right away. And of course we see thoughtful and playful design inside and out once we’ve arrived. The hotel is most famous for the different chairs and seating areas around the entire property, and this feature is definitely one of the guest favorites.

New York Raves No.7

An oversized round mirror is placed in front of the elevators on every floor, very nice way to check if you’re ready for town. The cozy guest room area is decorated with shades of soft lilac and warm beige in layers, it creates a romantic feeling.

New York Raves No.7

The chairs and lamps in the room are carefully selected, floor to ceiling decorative curtains soften the atmosphere and brings in the feeling of a retreat. I bet this is really popular with girls!

New York Raves No.7

The entire Morgans Hotel Group uses (Malin + Goetz) products in the guest rooms. So I was happy to see the entire toiletry kit provided at Clift, before leaving for San Francisco, I noticed that they include my favorites, the peppermint shampoo and the vitamin b5 body moisturizer, so I left my pre-packed toiletry kit at home in New York.

New York Raves No.7

In the guest room, there are two facing over-sized mirrors, creating the illusion of inception and gave more volume to the room itself. And of course, I had tons of fun photographing. There is also a Bose speaker for your iPod or iPhone, setting the mood in the room with your own music is at a snap.

New York Raves No.7

The Great Chair in the lobby is an ultra attraction for photo-op. Everyone feels like Alice after the shrinking potion in The Wonderland, it’s a load of fun. Besides comfy guest rooms, the Clift hotel hosts one of the most popular weekend night spot, Redwood Room, which attracts chic locals and out-of-towners. Also, one of the very special feature of the hotel is all the hidden nooks. There are hidden chairs and seating areas to allow private conversation all over the lobby. And if you’re up for it, chess and backgammon tables are also free for guests. I imagine a pair of guests playing chess with a nightcap before heading back to the room.

New York Raves No.7

Clift Hotel is close to all of the public transportation, and it’s right by Union Square, but I wouldn’t exactly call the area safe during the night. Girls, please pay extra attention if you’re traveling alone. Besides a little caution needed during the night time, I actually highly recommend this hotel. All the receptions and bellhops couldn’t be more polite and helpful. And would I stay there again? Definitely.

Gorgeous peonies brought home from farmer's market!

Mother’s day is here, have you thought about how to treat your mom or your better-halves? If you’re in New York, the late Spring weather is perfect for long strolls. For that reason, I’m going to recommend a few outdoor activities along with some classic treats that you could consider to spoil the moms and yourselves.

In the Northeast, there is only about 6 months of warm weather, and during this time, there are a lot of outdoor markets and street fairs to visit.

1. Hester Street Fair
Essex Street, New York, NY 10002

Hester Street Fair

Hester Street Fair is a weekly flea/food market that’s located in the trendy lower east side in Manhattan. The market season began on Saturday 04/28 and will continue to bring festivities to the LES every Saturday until 10/27. This is a street fair that’s great for families to go together on a weekenedsince there is shopping to be done and bites to be had. Stopping by the fair alone to look up a special gift is not a bad idea either.

2. New Amsterdam Market
224 Front Street, New York NY 10038

New Amsterdam Market is a weekly farmer’s market that happens on Sundays. It’s located at the south east of Manhattan in South Street Seaport, which in the old days used to be one of the most active seaport and fish market. Just like Hester Street Fair, New Amsterdam Market only opens during the warmer seasons, but it’s unique because of the special events. On the opening day of 04/29, the Bread Pavilion was presented along with the usual vendors. The Bread Pavilion gathered 15 local bakers to present unique loaves of bread made with the flour from locally grown grains. And on Mother’s day, there is a fish market revival special event to bring back the old soul of the seaport. Along with the cafes, restaurants and boutique stores, the market is really perfect for a Sunday afternoon. And perhaps you could pick up some ingredients and make a meal for the loved ones.

3. Smorgasburg
27 N. 6 St. (btw. Kent Ave. + East River), Brooklyn, NY

Smorgasburg happens in Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Once a week on Sunday, large number of food vendors gather in the outdoor area by the East River. Many of the these food items can only be found at Smorgasburg, if you love food, definitely don’t miss this. Williamsburg is also the most happening area right now for creatives and fashion-seekers. Boutiques, specialty food stores and incredible restaurants opened by the dozens in the past few years. So besides stopping by at the Smorgasburg, walk around Williamsburg as well, you might just find an adventure together.

Wanna spoil your loved ones with some classic treats?

1. Le Labo
233 Elizabeth Street, New York, NY 10012

New York Raves No.6

What’s more special than owning your personal fragrance? Besides mixing the ingredients to make some Le Labo classic scent with your name printed on the bottle, you could also request a personal consultation to invent your own mix. All of the perfumes are mixed after the orders or the special requests are in because perfumes need to be fresh as well. The respect Le Labo have on perfume is admirable. Bringing her to Le Labo to create her own fragrance would definitely be a real treat.

2. Underground at Le Parker Meridien
119 West 56th Street, New York, NY 10019

Nolita / Personal Favorites in Nolita

New York Raves No. 5

在Nolita除了Steven Alan出名的格子襯衫, Ciao Bella的義大利冰淇淋, 之前介紹過的Gimme Coffee, 布魯克林潮牌Built by Wendy, No. 6的木底鞋, 集結獨立品牌的Creatures of Comfort, 紐約披薩元祖之一的Lombardi’s, 還有這兩年風靡紐約的Ed’s Lobster Bar之外, 好店好食數之不盡。

Visiting New York, besides some real fine dining, most people probably spend a huge chunk of time shopping and browsing the city. Although New York is not huge, there are some really interesting little pockets of areas that are unique and adorned with independent boutiques and stores. Nolita has always been top three on my list of areas to get lost in and it’s definitely unique. This area, just like its name, (NOrth of LIttle ITAly), sits directly north of Little Italy, right next to Soho, covered with beautiful cobblestone roads. Broadway sits in between Nolita and Soho like a river, Soho in the west, Nolita in the east. In Soho, there are flagship stores to designer labels such as Prada, Chanel, Longchamps, Burberry, Kate Spade and Anya Hindmarch. There are also a number of very luxurious boutique hotels. But in Nolita, there are a bunch of tiny little independent boutiques that curate stylish garments and accessories. There are never too many of these stylish objects in stock, so if you’re lucky, you would be the owner of some truly unique pieces. Nolita is also packed with small but high-quality restaurants that you would visit again and again. In Nolita, there are the famous plaid shirts from Steven Alan, gelato from Ciao Bella, Gimme Coffee (I’ve mentioned in a previous article), Brooklyn fashion from Built by Wendy, clog boots from No. 6, the mecca of independent labels – Creatures of Comfort, one of the oldest and best pizza joints Lombardi’s, and Ed’s Lobster Bar that has come into fame in the past couple of years. But of course, this is only a small portion of what you would see in Nolita.

Having lived in NYC for almost a decade, I’ve tried my best to get to know the city as well as I could. So this one is about sharing my favorites stores in Nolita. The next time you’re in New York, besides the obviously must to visit Soho, I hope you don’t forget to walk eastward for five minutes to visit the darling Nolita as well.

Clic is a store that incoporates art, books and found design objects. It also doubles as a art gallery. Here you can find some rare photography books and great art pieces. The gallery is cozy yet airy. Besides the two locations in New York, Clic also has two sister stores in the south of France. The independent bookstore/gallery is found and curated by Christiane Celle, the owner of luxurious bohemian brand Calypso.

Canvas is a home furniture/style store, all of the objects are simple, clean-lined and of great quality. There is a another location in Chelsea, it’s a much bigger store, but the objects they have in both stores are identical. Out of everything from Canvas, I personally scream for all the wooden accessories and glassware. Everything from Canvas is in muted colors but they are not timid. They would fit into different home environments and still stand out. This minimalistic brand has gotten a lot of press lately because Taiwanse-American designer Jason Wu just collaborated with them for a series of gorgeous homeware for Spring.

Pure and decadent chocolate

紐約瘋什麼 No.4

All around the world, more and more people are becoming aware of the integrity of ingredients in food items. Have you ever thought about how your favorite chocolate was made? Where did the cocoa beans come from? Where did the dairy additives come from? Where did the (refined) sugar come from? Besides the negative effects sugar brings to our health based on recent studies, processed ingredients and additives from unknown sources are heavy tolls to our bodies as well. But should the pleasure of enjoying a piece of chocolate be ripped away from us? Absolutely not! Chocolate is actually great, a small piece of dark chocolate a day is beneficial to us, but eating only ethically and purely made chocolate is the way to go. I have always been a fan of Mast Brothers Chocolate in New York, so I’m bringing you guys inside the chocolate factory this time to see the simple and clean process of chocolate making.

Mast Brothers was founded by two brothers who had the dream of making excellent quality chocolate. From learning to make the chocolate at home by themselves, to locating ethical cocoa bean farm/distributor for long-term contract, to finally opening their brick and mortar store with the highest quality products, they insisted on best of the best and nothing else. Besides producing fine chocolate, they also wanted people to understand the process of chocolate-making. From last year, they opened up the factory for small group tours. Besides letting chocolate-lovers have the rush of visiting a chocolate factory, they also hope all of the visitors would quickly pick up the ability to identify good chocolate. The entire tour took 60 minutes, a very extensive tour, and you would get all of your questions answered with patience and thoughts, no matter what they might be. The tour began at 4:30PM, upon arriving, we saw a dried cacao pod and a line of various chocolate for tasting on the table. Our friendly tour guide, Derek, picked up the cacao pod and said, “this is where the cocoa beans are from.” After a thorough introduction from Derek, we had better understanding of the history of this small chocolate factory. After the business became more established, they not only care about buying excellent cacao but wanted to also get involved with the buying process. Last year, the entire Mast Brothers team went to the Dominicans to do a personal buying tour. Not only that, they hired a boat, transferred and shipped bags of beans back to New York by themselves. I believe it broke the recent import record in New York, really, no one does this any more, but that’s how much the Mast Brothers care about the process.

After watching a short video about their buying trip, we went around the factory to learn about the chocolate-making process. Each bag of beans needed to be hand filtered to rid of twigs or debris before they could be laid out on trays to go in the oven. Derek explained that roasting the beans would make the husks crunchy and easy to remove, and it’s the first step to get to the goodness in the middle.

紐約瘋什麼 No.4

After roasting and resting until the beans come to room temperature and safe to handle, they were then sent into a vacuum like husk-remover machine. Derek took a bean and crushed the husk to show us the cocoa bean inside, a 100% pure cocoa bean before any grinding or processing. We each took a bite, it was bitter yet extremely aromatic. Usually, the leftover husks go into trash, but Derek told us that they gave some of them away for people who like to add the husks to the compost for their gardens and vegetable patches. Also, a customer took the husks and made chocolate-infused whiskey, truly anything can happen when you see through a creative idea!

The next step for the beans were to go into the stone grinders. A long time ago, when there was no machinery, the cocoa beans were also stone-ground, but it was all done by hands slowly. That was one of the many reasons why chocolate was such a luxurious item. When we got into the grinding room, Derek poured some beans into a freshly started stone grinder. He told us all of the grinders are grinding beans from different suppliers and some have started earlier simply to match their production schedule. Just like you see in the pictures, when the cocoa beans become a shiny silky smooth liquid, the grinding process is done.

The next step is one of the most important step in chocolate-making yet most people have no idea about. The ground beans now need to rest in a humidity and temperature controlled area for days, weeks, sometimes up to months. This step ensures the stability and even flavor for the chocolate that is being produced later. Derek showed us all the bins of the chocolate resting on shelves, some have only just been put up, some have been quietly resting for 5 months.

After resting, the cocoa would be mixed with pure cane sugar at the ratio of at least 7 to 3, making it a 70% dark chocolate, but the percentage vary depending on their recipes. For people who dislike cane sugar, they’ve also developed a few bars with maple syrup/sugar and they taste just as good. Mast brothers insist on adding no dairy to the chocolate, so every single slab you get from them will be high quality dark chocolate. Each type of chocolate bar has gone through lots of experiments to land on the perfect cocoa to sugar ratio. At the tasting table we find that some of them are particularly sour, some are slightly fruity and there was a very unique one that was smoky. The flavors differ because the origins of the beans vary, the ways the beans were dried by the manufacturers also vary. But all the flavors come from nature without additives.

Once the chocolate is properly mixed with the sugar, we saw the team pour the chocolate in molds with some finishing touches and let them set. Then another team would hand wrap these babies one by one. Their entire careful and sincere process just blows me away. I’ve learned so much about chocolate-making and the method to distinguish good chocolate from bad on this tour. I also finally understand why good chocolate is so expensive but unforgettable. Next time when you’re in New York, or if you come across Mast Brothers Chocolate in stores, don’t just chomp it down, give it respect and slowly let it melt in your mouth. They are sensational!

Packed into the crowded and expensive Manhattan, to have a garden at home is luxury, to have a balcony or a tiny backyard for vegetation and plants is heaven. But as long as you’re up for it, finding a piece of greenery is quick and easy from the city. Besides the Central Park in Manhattan, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, a 20-minute train ride from Grand Central takes you to the glorious New York Botanical Garden. The scale of the garden is big enough that it even hosts a small forest inside. Working in front of the computer all day long, strolls inside of farmers’ markets and nature’s paths are the best energy boosters. So two years ago, we became members of the NYBG.

At NYBG, I can walk the trails inside the lush green forest, listen to the rhythmic flowing stream, but my favorites has to be the seasonal flower shows. There is the Holiday Train Show in the winter, Japanese Kiku(Chrysanthemum) show in the fall, Cherry blossoms covering the grounds in the spring, plus all the special shows that are on each year, I get to see something different every time I pay a visit to NYBG. And out of all the shows, the one I’ve not skipped once in the past 3 years is the Orchid show.

It’s the 10th anniversary for the orchid show this year and it’s the most magnificent I’ve seen. A pleasant surprise and honor that the infamous French botanist Patrick Blanc was invited to create the show for NYBG this year. I’m sure a lot of you know, Patrick is most famous for the exuberant, layered, dimensional vertical living walls around the world. He was invited twice by my home country, Taiwan, to create vertical gardens for our National Theater in Taipei. Both times he received rave reviews for the magic he brought to the venue.

Besides constantly aligning and refining his production methods, as a true scientist/botanist, Patrick would study the weather, climate, environment, natural light, wind and the local plants before designing any living wall. During the speech at the member’s preview day, he had mentioned his desire in reflecting native plant cultures at any given location and the importance of it. He also always hope for the vertical gardens to stand the test of time and be ever-evolving. There are techniques in selecting the plants suitable for the vertical walls as well. One of the ways to identify a perfect plant is by the way the leaves and branches grow. The plant should not be bushy, the leaves should grow in a way that the leaves aren’t stacking on top of one another. A great example of this type of plants is a fern, take a close look at the way fern leaves grow! The gap between each leaf allows room for the entire plant structure to absorb the already limited sunlight hitting the vertical gardens, pretty smart. Also, when designing the planting grid, arranging the different plants based on colors, texture, size and shape of will help create the dimensional effects. It was such a pleasure to hear Patrick speak on member’s preview day. With his signature head-to-toe green outfit and the animated description about his process, I felt every ounce of his passion as a botanist.

Post speech, I couldn’t stop snapping photos at the show, every vertical garden was breath-taking. Along with the ferns and ornamental foliage, the blooming orchids looked so delicate and enchanting with glistening colors. The orchid show is on display from March 3rd until April 22nd, if you’re an orchid fan, it’s a must go! Besides the vertical gardens with Patrick Blanc, another exciting French collaborated project coming to the garden will be the Monet’s Garden, which starts on May 19th. For you who aren’t able to visit the real Monet’s Garden in France this year, consider stopping by the NYBG to get a glimpse of the beauty. I know I can’t wait!

Every New York morning, on the street, you would see almost everyone with a cup of coffee in their hands. And if you’re a coffee-loving New Yorker, you must have a coffeehouse that is close to your heart.

Back in the 90s, chained coffeehouses invaded every corner of the US. Most of the celebrities were always coffee-clad in their paparazzi shots, all of a sudden, coffee drinks became popular accessories for the younger generation instead of a delicate beverage for the matured souls. A lot of these popular coffee drink are mixed with artificial syrup, commercial dairy, and coffee made from beans with uneven qualities. The real taste of coffee has been overlooked. The boldness, bitterness and texture of coffee were overwhelmed by all these additives. And many people don’t even know or remember the real taste of coffee. Independent high quality coffeehouses have always been around in the US, but in the past twenty years some of them have suffered due to the fierce competition from big chains.

Taking a closer look at New York, you will notice that the popular made-from-scratch trend in the past few years have nurtured a group of experts. There are chocolatier, urban farmers, gluten-free patisserie, beer-brewing master, leather accessory artists, personalized bicycle, take your pick, it’s a thoroughly refreshing new trend. New York has always been thought of as the place for people who have deep pockets, and known as the city of finance and fashion. But the past few years, New Yorkers have been really enjoying the art of handcrafting. Also, with a major awareness of sustainable and clean food, many New Yorkers are enjoying the process of finding where their food comes from. Many coffee lovers would join cupping sessions to understand the difference in flavors of the various coffee beans, some of them would even go above and beyond to become baristas. I believe this seems overboard for people who are happy with just any coffee, but there is a real study in coffee beans. The climate, soil and water quality of where the beans grow, the temperature and humidity of the harvesting season, the way the beans are harvested, transported and roasted, all of these factors affect the taste of the beans. It’s just like how we determine the quality of a bottle of wine.

With this trend, a large number of independent coffeehouses that only use fair trade or direct trade beans pop up all over the city. Besides exceptional coffee, they choose to use clean and organic dairy from the Hudson Valley farms for their lattés and cappuccinos. On top of the regular espresso shots, cold dripped coffee and individual freshly-made coffee from a Hario kettle are also very popular among the customers. Pastries are a must in these coffeehouses, collaboration with local bakeries guarantees daily deliver of fresh pastries made with local and sustainable ingredients. This mutually beneficial business model with a focus on serving the community with the best has got New Yorkers by the heart. And of course, I have a few personal favorites to share with you.

I ♥ New York

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, besides Paris and Venice, New York is definitely one of the most romantic cities in the world. It has been used as the backdrop of romance in so many movies. Lots of love-thirst single ladies and gentlemen search and hope to fall in love here.

There are a huge number of restaurants in New York, it’s easy to get access to a luxurious meal, for example Per Se, Le Bernardin, Eleven Madison Park and Jean-Georges. All of these restaurants are owned by celebrity chefs and it’s virtually impossible to get a bad meal/candlelight dinner in them. But in New York, compared to the high-end restaurants, there are even more small brasserie-type of hidden gems in the alleys and less travelled streets.

01

Buvette opened in the West Village by chef Jody Williams at the beginning of last year. This little place is almost identical to a local Paris brasserie. With all various items you can order and a smaller portion, every customer can create an experience of their own. It’s such a relaxed yet formal enough place to dine.

02

the little owl, just like Buvette, is teeny tiny, but it has the best atmosphere. A lot of celebrities love to drop by as well. Though the tables are so close that you can hear everything your neighbors are saying, but that also means you sit extra close to your date. Besides a warm and welcoming environment, every Mediterranean-inspired dish is absolute perfection.

03

Palma is also in West Village, every day the chef uses the farm fresh ingredients to create authentic but overtly heavy Italian dishes. Besides the good food, the back side of the restaurant is a beautiful garden. The customers could choose to sit in the garden or at the front of the house where it’s more private, but to create a special night with your date, choose the garden.

Ayza Chocolate & Wine Bar

Besides these few restaurants, there are also August for a the green-house garden dining experience, The House for a romantic setting and delicious French food, Cookshop for the ever-evoling menu with local ingredients only, 15 East for the sushi, elegant Japanese dishes and the hand-made soba noodles, and last but not least, there is Ayza Chocolate & Wine Bar for a chocolate-filled Valentine’s day.

Besides eating out, my favorite way to spend this day is to celebrate at home with my loved one, but don’t forget the chocolates and flowers. These two Valentine’s day staples could be found in almost any stores, some people would even order online, but Valentine’s day needs to be special!

04

The Meadow

The Meadow is a really special store, it sells hundreds of different type of natural salt. It’s originated in Portland, Oregon with a branch store in New York. Besides the most commonly seen Himalayan pink salt, fleur de sel, there are also black salt from Hawaii, grey salt, ruby salt, I can’t even remember the exact number for the different types of natural salt they carry. But what’s special about this store is it also sells a large variety of chocolates, the most beautiful in-season special variety of flowers, and carefully selected wine collection. Whatever you need for your Valentine can be found in this little tiny shop!

05

Kee’s Chocolates

If you have the flowers, but want to find some hand-made and excellent quality chocolates, you have to stop by Kee’s Chocolates.

06

The little store that’s located in Soho was founded by Kee Ling Tong in 2002. Every single piece of chocolate in the store is handmade with love by Kee. Not only does she care about quality ingredients, she also created some exclusive flavors such as Jasmine, Pignoli, Sesame, Black Rose, Fennel and Earl Grey.

07

Kee also started making the ever-so-popular French dessert in New York, macaron, for a while now, with distinctive flavors. Not like the other store owners, Kee can be found on site almost every day, she remembers and almost can name all of her customers with a warm greeting. Besides impeccable chocolates, her customer service is also perfection. She quietly told me that besides the heart-shape passionfruit chocolates, there will be some special flavors just for Valentine’s day. But please give the store a call or visit the store to find out, you won’t regret it!

08

Mast Brothers

Besides Kee’s Chocolates, the other well-known handmade chocolate store is Mast Brothers.

09

Mast brothers, like its name, was founded by two brothers. Besides the well-balanced chocolate/sugar ratio and a well developed chocolate making process, it’s probably the first store in New York that imports their own cacao beans. To understand the environment the cacao beans grow in and to see the process bean-roasting, the two brothers along with some of their employees took a trip to The Dominican Republic to do the merchandising, researching and moving the beans back to New York themselves.

10

Why do they have such determination? Because the owners want to provide the best chocolates and not mediocre products by mixing dairy or lower quality ingredients. They want to give the customers the best. All the the employees are extremely helpful with any questions as well. Over 20 different types of chocolate bars, fresh truffle daily and handmade treats gives you plenty to choose from.

11

Finally, if you don’t want to go out, and you also dislike chocolates, take your date to Lady M for a slice of cake and a cup of coffee, oh and exchange some loving words.

12

The classic New York confection store serves fresh cakes and pastries daily. Not overtly sugary and buried in whipped cream, the cakes actually felt light and the ingredients shine through, very distinctive tastes that you wouldn’t forget. You can tell how attractive this place is by looking at the take-out line by the store even on weekdays.

13

Besides the most popular Mille Crépes, Gâteau Aux Marrons, Green Tea Mousse Cake, Flourless Chocolate Cake are also sensational. And the other specialty item is Flan Aux Pommes that are on served between the months of October through March.

New York is filled with romantic corners, besides the food, flowers and chocolates on Valentine’s day, don’t forget to take your date out on a walk, look a closer look at this lovely place, find a corner that belongs the two of you. It could be on The Highline during sunset, it could be a secluded corner in Central Park, it could be overlooking the Manhattan cityscape in Brooklyn, or it could be a good lounge with great music. No matter what your plan is for Valentine’s day, don’t forget the most important three words, “I Love You.”
