2012 小年夜及除夕夜 / 2012 Lunar New Year's Eve and the day before
每年農曆年都會和喵他們相約一起包水餃過年, 今年也不例外。雖然今年只有喵在紐約, 但我們還是一起過了小年夜。去喵家過年的時候, 我們最常一起做喵媽的白菜豬肉水餃。之前我在部落格寫過的我們家的高麗菜豬肉水餃也一直都還沒有給喵嚐過, 因此我們今年決定把餡料分成一半, 喵做白菜水餃我做高麗菜水餃。
Every lunar new year we would spend the day at Meow's for dumplings, and the tradition continues this year. Though only Meow is in NYC this year, we still decided to spend the day before lunar new year's eve together. Whenever we spend new year's at Meow's for dumplings, we usually use her mom's napa cabbage pork dumpling recipe. I have yet to make my mom's green cabbage pork dumplings that I wrote in the blog earlier for Meow to try. Therefore, we decided to divide the filling in two portions this year; one for the napa cabbage, one for for the green cabbage. And we would be in charge of the recipe that we bring to the table.
把切碎的白菜及高麗菜撒鹽脫水後, 加入絞肉, 醬油和麻油混合完成冰入冰箱後我們便出門去參加在威廉堡的Mast Brothers巧克力工廠導覽。興高采烈巧克力中毒的狀態回到家後我們才發現似乎沒多少時間做餃子皮了, 當下決定把絞肉做成蒸肉丸, 並臨時起意的做了三人分享的蔬菜味噌烏龍麵。
As usual, we added some salt to the minced cabbage to draw the water out. After some time, we squeezed the water out of the cabbage, added it to the ground pork with some soy sauce and sesame sauce to taste. To attend the chocolate factory tour in Williamsburg at Mast Brothers, we put the fillings in the fridge and headed outdoors. With the most fun time at the chocolate factory and a legit chocolate-high, we also realized that we ran out of time to make a dough for the dumpling skins. Together, we decided to make steamed meatballs with the fillings we made earlier and just skip the dumpling skin all together. To make up for the starch, we decided to make a large pot of vegetable miso udon to split amongst the three of us.
說真的, 吃著沒有餃子皮的蒸餃, 我們非常的開心, 非但沒有想念餃子皮, 反而發現了餃子餡的新用法。這是下班回家快速便能完成的蒸肉丸新招式! 搭配著順口的"南部美人"清酒, 飯後水果, 我們也圍著餐桌嬉笑的聊到深夜, 又是一個溫暖的聚會。
To be honest, the meatballs without the dumpling skins tasted fantastic. Not only did we not miss the skins, we were happy to discover a new way to use the filling. It's also a dish that can be made quickly after work during weekdays, so convenient! With a small glass of Nanbu Bijin sake, some fruit, we sat around the dining table and chatted until late night, another heart-warming night.
今天就是除夕啦, 在除夕夜的這一天, 我打定了要大掃除的心意。整個下午把家裡非常凌亂的地方好好的整理了一番, 並把從台灣帶回來的大量書籍收拾歸位。在台灣時, 因為無法留到過年, 早早就和爸媽提早吃了年夜飯。今天雖然只有我們倆在國外, 年夜飯我也沒有忘掉, 也把爸媽在大溪買給我們的檜木筷拿出來用囉! 每一道簡單的菜還是有我為今年順利許下的心願。
And it's lunar new year's eve today! I made up my mind to do a cleaning of the apt since it is Chinese tradition to thoroughly clean the household before the new year. The whole afternoon I spent time to organize the areas that really needed help and put away the huge number of books that I brought back from Taiwan. When we were in Taiwan, because my parents already knew we couldn't spend the new year with them so we had an early celebration together. Though it's just the two of us in the US today, I haven't forgotten the new year's eve dinner, and I broke out the hinoki chopsticks that my parents bought us when we visited Da Xi together. I made a simple dinner but every dish is a wish for the new year.
Steamed flounder with fermented black beans, goji berries and ginger slices. Fish sounds like Yu in Chinese and the word for leftover sounds exactly the same. During Chinese New Year, we always have a fish dish in hope of having leftover and preserves in our savings for the coming years.
Stir-fried broccoli, carrots and hedgehog mushrooms. Broccoli has a sounds Hua in it and it sound similar to the word for becoming well-off, always a good blessing for the new year. Carrot has the sound Hong in it and it means red, and as always Chinese just love the color red as a blessing.
Stir-fried pea tendrils, I hope all our plans would sprout beautifully like pea tendrils.
Clam leek miso soup. Leek has a sound Jiu in it and is the same as the sound for longevity and clam has a sound Li in it and is the same as the sound for the word to describe smooth sailing. I hope for longevity and smooth sailing in both our work and marriage.
Red bean rice cake dessert soup, red bean for red again and rice cake has the sound Gao in it which is the same as the word to describe high. It is tradition for Chinese to have some type of rice cake during new year as a blessing to reach to a higher place for the coming year.
