Treasures from Green Market

About a little over three years ago, I started getting into "serious eating." My family was having health crisis and having been completely shocked to the core, I started paying attention to my everyday intake. I started with the basic lowering fat intake, avoiding deep-fried food intake and consuming a lot of vegetables. But the more I learned about the food world, the more I got into studying every single ingredients and the usage of them. The produce from this market might be cheap but they were probably grown with chemical-heavy feed to look this vibrant and got sprayed tons of pesticide to look this flawless. The fish from that market is exotic and traveled all the way from Greece but I don't know if it was ethically caught and also can't be sure if they were just farmed fish. Once I went that far, it was the point of no return. I started studying the origins of all the produce, and I would be nosy at farmer's markets and ask how the farmers grow the food. Because I'm a farmer's market regular, I got to know which produce to look for at which season. The peas and ramps in the Spring, the peach, zucchini and tomatoes in the summer, they all look beautiful in my eyes. I started changing my cooking habits to go with what I find seasonally and have a much better understanding of what I put in my mouth affecting not only me but also the environment. If the environment is sick, then we won't get nutritious healthy food to eat in the future...

This short film was made by Ethan Goldwater of ListenIn Pictures with his friend and a DJ, Jan Woo. In the film we see Jan making a wonderful salad, but also see how he makes it a mission to reach balance within him and with his surroundings. I adore this blog entry that Ethan wrote for the debut of the short, and I quoted the part of him describing what this film is about:

Jan’s dedication to health – not only the health of human bodies but also to the health of the ecosystem which supports us. It is about being conscious of the decisions that you make as a consuming, living organism, and about becoming more aware of the decisions that those producing your food are making.
