前幾天在Milk & Mode看到了簡單的杏仁醬餅乾食譜。 開心的發現是全素且無麩質的餅乾, 而且材料家裡都有,因此心血來潮的在晚上十點把食材一一搬出來開始準備烤餅乾。這個餅乾做法非常的簡單, 食譜是來自Gwyneth Paltrow的新書 It's All Good , 雖然家中並沒有這本書但聽到了不少正面的評價。食譜中用的是杏仁醬但喜愛優質花生醬如我們, 還是選擇了使用花生醬來替代杏仁醬, 加上我們在春天買的Crown Maple Syrup, 我等不及嚐嚐餅乾出爐後的滋味。

A few days ago, I stumbled upon a simple almond butter cookie recipe on Milk & Mode. I was happy to discover that the cookies were not only gluten-free but vegan as well. All of the ingredients listed in the recipe were ALREADY in my pantry so at 10pm at night I put everything out on the counter and decided to just bake away! This is a crazy simple recipe from the Gwyneth Paltrow's new book It's All Good. I don't own the cookbook but I've heard good things about it. The recipe called for almond butter, but for the good-quality peanut butter lovers like us, I chose to use peanut butter in the cookies instead. Combined with the excellent Crown Maple Syrup we got back in the Spring, I couldn't wait to see how these cookies turn out.

整個食譜中的主角食材絕對是Maldon Sea Salt Flakes。近幾年來有許多甜點師傅都喜歡這種鹹甜組合的創新, 例如海鹽巧克力和培根巧克力。前年在ICE上由Eleven Madison Park的甜點師傅教的甜點課時, 她就說過其實做冰淇淋的時候加入比平常再多一點點的鹽分, 整個甜點的風味會完全的不同, 希望我們都可以勇敢的嘗試。她說的一點都沒有錯, 只要不加入過量的鹽,那少許的鹹味會顛覆整個甜點的風味, 甜鹹兩味同時在口中炸開的的感覺是絕等美妙的。

One of the most important ingredient in this particular cookie recipe is probably the Maldon Sea Salt Flakes. There has definitely been a craze in the baking world about combining savory and sweet ingredients in the past few years, two quick example would be seasalt and bacon in chocolate. I've even taken a pastry making class at ICE with the pastry chef from Eleven Madison Park that swears on adding more salt into the ice cream base to bring out the flavor. You know what, it really works! Sometimes too much salt can be overwhelming, but with just the right touch, you could revolutionize the entire dessert!

動手時間15分鐘, 餅乾分兩次進烤箱花了30分鐘, 總共45分鐘我就烤出了這個材料簡單又好吃的餅乾了。在網架上放涼了45分鐘後到午夜我就能好好的品嚐, 很快吧! 雖然公司的同事大部分都不是蔬食者也沒有麩質過敏, 但大家都覺得好吃喔, 一起來試試這個簡單健康又美味的餅乾吧!

These cookies turned out to be delicious。 The mixing took me about 15 minutes, the two batches of baking took me about 30 minutes, but that was it. I made these cookies in 45 minutes and was able to get a taste of them by midnight once they've had enough time to cool off on the rack. Majority of the people in my office are not vegan or gluten-free but I think every one enjoyed having a taste of these cookies, try baking them yourselves!

梅爾頓海鹽花生餅乾 / 可以作出約24個餅乾 從Gwyneth Paltrow的It's All Good裡的Almond Butter Cookie改良的

材料 1 1/2杯 無麩質麵粉(若麵粉中不含黃原膠, 請自行加入3/4茶匙) 1/2茶匙 細緻海鹽 1茶匙 泡打粉 1杯 優質花生醬 (最好的花生醬是只用花生和鹽製成的, 沒有棕櫚油也沒有其他念不出名字的食材) 1杯 優質楓葉糖漿 1茶匙 香草精 1/2茶匙 梅爾頓海鹽海鹽

做法 烤箱餘熱至華氏350度。烤盤上平鋪烤箱用紙。

在一個大碗中把乾的食材(麵粉, 細緻海鹽, 泡打粉)充分混合,在另一個碗裡把濕的食材(花生醬, 楓葉糖漿, 香草精)也充分混合後將兩個碗中的食材混合, 用手搓出一個個的小球後壓扁放上烤盤, 記得餅乾與餅乾間要留些間隙. 最後在餅乾上撒上梅爾頓海鹽, 不用多, 5-7粒就可以了。

在烤箱中烤至餅乾變硬, 空氣中充滿香氣, 約10-12分鐘, 放在烘培用網架上放涼後即可享用。

Peanut Butter Cookies with Maldon Sea Salt / Makes about 2 dozen Based on the Almond Butter Cookie from It's All Good, by Gwyneth Paltrow

Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups gluten-free flour (if the flour doesn't include xanthan gum, add 3/4 teaspoon) 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 cup peanut butter (peauts & salt are all you need to see in the ingredient list) 1 cup good-quality maple syrup 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon Maldon sea salt

Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line baking sheet(s) with parchment paper.

Whisk together the flour, fine sea salt, and baking powder. In a separate bowl, whisk together the peanut butter, maple syrup, and vanilla extract. Thoroughly combine the wet and dry ingredients. With your hands, form the cookies into small balls, then press them into disc shapes. Place each of them on the baking sheet, and remember to leave about 1 inch of space in between all cookies. Sprinkle each cookie with just a bit of the Maldon salt, it doesn't need to be much, 5-7 flakes for each cookie is a great amount.

Bake until the air is fragrant and the cookies are just firm, 10 to 12 minutes. Let them cool on a rack before serving.

紐約最讓人傾倒的是它多樣性的面貌, 有世界各地來的人, 有各種生活形態, 有各種宗教, 有各種潮流, 有各種料理。在這個城市裡, 不論你是什麼樣的人, 只要不犯法, 都能被受到尊重。相同的, 任何的飲食習慣也都可以被接受。近年來基於健康的飲食習慣, 響應環保的理念, 慢慢的素食在紐約也變成一股主流。在這裡, 素食者的飲食習慣是完全被接受, 尊重, 且與宗教信仰並不成等號的。很單純, 無負擔的, 素食只是眾多選擇中的一種。

New York is well-loved for its multidimensional nature. There are people from all over the world, endless variety of lifestyles, countless trends, boundless cuisines. In this city, no matter who you are, as long as you're not devious by nature, what you do with your life would always be respected. In recent years, people in the city are getting more conscious about healthy eating habits and our duties in defending the wellness of the environment. Vegetarianism and veganism have almost become mainstream in New York City. And of course this is a city that embraces all types of diet. In NYC, vegetarianism and veganism are completely accepted, respected, and not automatically linked to religion (i.e. buddhism). Simply put, vegetarianism and veganism are just two among the many choices of diets.

而在這個料理天堂, 許多餐廳紛紛跟進, 配合著大廚的飲食理念自創出一道道素食佳肴, 讓外食的素食者也能有所選擇。這些餐廳除了氣氛佳, 提供對身體不會產生太大負擔的料理, 口味也令人難忘。接下來就推薦幾家到了紐約不可不知的素食餐廳。

In the foodie-heaven we call New York, many chefs have come up with their own vegetarian/vegan friendly menus without breaking the original concepts of of their restaurants. Not only do they provide great atmosphere, healthful nutritious options, the food is usually amazingly delicious. And now please allow me to introduce a few of my very favorites:

1. Kajitsu

這是一家專供懷石料理的日本餐廳, 永遠都要及早預約但非常值得的一家好店。大廚每個月會應節氣及當地食材在Menu上做調整, 甚至連當月推薦的茶都會配合餐點詳細的替客人介紹。基本上點餐時只有兩個套餐可以選擇, 一個是四道菜的風套餐, 一個是七道菜的花套餐。我個人非常推薦花套餐, 畢竟是難得訂到的餐廳, 應該要好好的享用。最令我難忘的是就算吃完七道精緻的菜, 我是舒服的飽, 腸胃沒有負擔的飽。當然看到美麗的擺盤, 新鮮的食材, 也驚嘆與大廚的想像力及功力。

This is a kaiseki-style Japanese restaurant, you should always book 1 month in advance in order to get a table but it's well worth the wait. The chef changes the menu every month based on what is available locally and seasonally, they would even pair a recommended tea with the menu. Basically there are two set courses, one is the 4-course Kaze menu, the other is the 7-course Hana menu. I personally recommend the Hana menu because if it took you 1 month to get in there, it's better to get your money's worth! The thing that really amazes me is that even after 7 courses, I'm never uncomfortably full, it's always a satisfying and happy fullness, no stress or indigestion. And of course, seeing how beautiful the dishes are plated and tasting the fresh and flavorful ingredients, I'm always blown away by the chef's imagination and culinary techniques.

2. Dirt Candy

Amanda Cohen帶著自己漂亮的履歷, 葷素料理都精通的技藝, 在紐約的下東城開了Dirt Candy。這家餐廳是一個廚房小到連轉身都需要和其他廚師配合的空間, 但這個迷你廚房端出來的菜非常的驚人。從使用的食材, 擺盤, 到酥脆軟嫩有層次的質感, 有深度的醬料, 完全顛覆了素食的概念。其中最令我難忘的一個前菜就是用蘑菇做成的肝醬, 不管是質感還是風味都讓我想要再來一盤。

Amanda Cohen has an impressive resumé, she has the skills to cook not only for the herbivore but also the omnivores. With the glorious background, she opened her own restaurant in the Lower East side called Dirt Candy. This is a super tiny restaurant that even a turn in the kitchen to grab plates would require team work, but everything from this mini kitchen is amazing. From the fresh ingredients, the beautiful presentations, the incredible textures and the flavorful sauces, they all blow my mind away and completely changed my perception of plant-based food. One of my most favorite dish has to be the mushroom paté, both the texture and the taste of this dish always makes me scream for seconds.

3. Cafe Blossom

Blossom在紐約有好幾家的分店, 有正規的餐廳, 也有全素的烘培坊, 是素食者最愛的餐廳系列之一。我非常喜歡他們的當日特餐,藜麥沙拉, 越式三明治, 及甜點。所有的餐點都有漂亮的外觀且完全不會平淡無味, 反而有濃厚的醬汁。它的價錢也比前面的兩家精緻餐廳要來得親民許多。是我在忙碌的週末常去的地方。

Blossom is a vegan chain in New York, within the chain, there are sit-down restaurants, pick-up joints and a bakery. I love their daily special, quinoa salad, bahn mi and the desserts. All of the dishes look great and taste better, not at all flavorless, in fact, they make some of the most amazing sauces. Compared to the two restaurants mentioned before Blossom, the price is also better, it has become one of our regular go-tos for the weekend.

4. Hangawi

大部分的人對於韓國料理的印象都是烤肉或是泡菜, 但其實韓國料理可算是最多樣化的亞洲料理之一。韓國人對於養生的熱衷及遵守中醫概念的思想方式使得他們的料理讓葷素者都非常喜愛。從不同的泡菜, 小菜, 煎餅, 鍋物, 麵食, 把所有的料理都吃一遭可能都還沒有輪到烤肉呢。Hangawi便是以全素為主的韓國料理, 他們自製的泡菜清淡好吃, 我經常要求打包一些回家料理用。除了多變的季節性料理, 他們的各類茶也很值得一試, 尤其是溼冷的天氣來一杯大棗茶, 全身都暖了起來。

When you mention Korean food, most people think about BBQ or kimchi, but Korean cuisine is probably one of the most dynamic cuisine among all Asian cuisine. Koreans are big on healthy eating, the herbal medicine theories are also integrated into their daily lives. The combination of the two make Korean cuisine approachable not only for the omnivores but also for the herbivores. With the giant variety of kimchi, banchan, jeon (pancakes), stews and noodles, we wouldn't even need to get to BBQ at all, and you can find this fantastic plant-based Korean cuisine at Hangawi. Their house-made kimchi is tasty yet not over powering, I often ask the restaurant to pack me a pint to bring home with me. Besides the ever-changing seasonal cuisine, all of their teas are worth a try, espeically on a cold and gloomy day, a cup of daechucha (jujube tea) warms you right up!

5. ABC Kitchen

這個由鼎鼎大名的Jean-Georges Vongerichten主持的farm-to-table(農場直送)餐廳在紐約已經火紅了一陣子了。但ABC對我來說最特別的地方是不論你的飲食習慣是葷是素, 貼心的服務人員都能配合替你搭配選擇最適合你的餐點。而且因為食材的頂尖, 法國料理的基礎, 每一道菜都讓人驚嘆。這是今年來紐約渡假的人我都大力推薦的好餐廳, 就連挑剔的素食者也都讚不絕口呢。

This farm-to table restaurant is part of the group of restaurants owned by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and it's been sought after by foodies in New York for quite a while. At ABC, the service is special, it doesn't matter if you're a meat-eater or a veg-eater, the restaurant always recommends dishes that would go together to satisfy your palate. And because of the quality ingredients, solid french culinary techniques, each dish is beautiful and satisfying. It's a place that I highly recommend to anyone who is vacationing in New York, even the pickiest herbivores gush about this place.

經常大魚大肉的朋友們, 下次不妨試試這幾家素食餐廳。想吃有情調又美味的大餐不一定要是牛排或龍蝦喔!

新的一年又到了! 在國外住的越久, 越會懷念小時候大肆過年的感覺。今年姊姊剛好來紐約出差, 所以當然馬上下廚做了一頓小小的年夜飯嘍。今年是第一年做全素的年夜飯, 自然要多點思考多點創意, 但我在廚房玩的不亦樂乎!

It's Chinese New Year again! It has been many years since I left Taiwan, with each year passing, I miss the true new year festivities more and more. This year, my older sister coincidentally stopped by NYC for a business trip, so yup, I ran into the kitchen and made a small new year's eve meal for the three of us. It was my first time making a vegan new year's meal, a lot of creativity and thinking was required, but I had so much fun in the kitchen!

全素的餃子我想了一陣子, 還是希望保留最喜愛的高麗菜, 但配料還能加些什麼呢? 考慮了瓠瓜, 但不是季節也買不到, 所以決定用容易入手的佛手瓜, 蛋白質的部分就用之前就自己做好的凍豆腐。依照往常的蔬菜切丁後撒鹽出水擰乾後, 拌入壓碎了的凍豆腐, 少許薑末, 2大匙的醬油溜就完成了餡料。

I thought long and hard about the vegan dumplings, I definitely wanted to keep my favorite ingredient, green cabbage, but what else could I add to the filling? I thought about adding calabash, but it's totally out of season, so I bought the easy to find chayote. For the protein of the dumpling, I added the frozen tofu that I made days before (Throw your tofu into the freezer for a few days. Before using, thaw it out and squeeze out the access water, add to stew or stir-fry, you will be pleasantly surprised by the texture, I kid you not!). As usual, I diced the veggies, mixed them with salt and let sit for 15 minutes, squeezed out the access water and mix with meshed frozen tofu, some minced ginger, 2 tbsp of miso tamari, and the filling was done.

煮完試吃後非常滿意, 全素水餃真的不難呢, 下次再來試試其他的內餡!

過年習俗桌上要有魚有年糕, 所以我想出了好辦法, 將媽媽從台灣寄來的紅豆年糕切成長條, 外面裹上自己做的芋泥(很簡單, 芋頭切丁蒸熟, 拌入糖及椰子油), 用餃子皮包成魚的形狀, 蒸好不就成了一條條的小魚了嗎?

It is tradition for Chinese to have fish and rice cake in the new year's eve meal. How do I come up with a vegan fish without resorting to the processed food section? I made dessert! I cut the red bean rice cake my mom sent from Taiwan into small rectangular blocks, wrap them around the sweet taro mesh I made (cubed the taro, steam it, mesh it with some sugar of choice and coconut oil until smooth), then wrap these sweet blocks into dumplings skins and folded the skin into fish shapes. Steamed fish for dessert!

另外兩道加了兩道菜, 一個是簡單的蒜炒豆苗, 另一道是比較費時的鑲油豆腐, 費時的是準備工作, 真正料理的時間其實非常的短。將香菇, 金針菇, 荸薺, 紅蘿蔔切丁, 薑切末。起油鍋把薑末炒香, 其他材料都入鍋加點鹽麴和白胡椒粉炒熟後盛入碗中備用。在剛炒好的餡料上磨山藥泥, 量的多寡不一定, 我是大約以餡料4:山藥泥1的比例。山藥泥除了有強大的營養成分, 另一個作用是讓餡料黏稠, 所以接下來就是仔細的把碗中的材料混合攪拌。接下來把油豆腐一個個挖出四方形的空洞, 挖出來的油豆腐可以順手加入餃子餡料喔, 把攪拌好的餡料填滿油豆腐, 入鍋蒸5-7分鐘。最後放上香菜葉點綴, 比較重口味的朋友們可以再灑上薄醬油或任何自己喜歡的醬汁。

I added two other dishes to the table, one is a simple stir fried pea shoots with garlic, the other is veggie stuffed fried-tofu cube (you can get fried-tofu cubes in Chinatown). The stuffed tofu dish took some time to prepare but the actual cooking time was really short. First, dice some shitake mushroom, enoki mushroom, fresh water chestnut, and carrots, mince a small amount of ginger. In a heated pan, add some oil, first add minced ginger to the pan and stir fry for a minute until fragrant, then add in the rest of the ingredients, with some shio koji and ground white pepper, stir fry for 3-5 minutes then set aside in a bowl. Grind some raw mountain yam into the same bowl, It's completely up to your personal taste in terms of how much mountain yam to add to the bowl. I adore mountain yam so I added 1 part of mountain yam to 4 parts of veggies. The mountain yam is not only nutritious, it also becomes a binding agend for the filling. Now mix everything together and mix it well. The next step is to cut openings to the fried-tofu cubes and spoon out the middle until you have hallowed tofu cubes. Don't throw what you spoon out away, throw them into the dumpling filling! Now stuff each tofu cube with the mountain yam/veggie mixture you just made, place all stuffed cubes on a plate and steam for 5-7 minutes. Now the finishing touches, for decoration, place a cilantro leaf on top of each tofu cube. If you prefer heavier flavors, you can sprinkle some soy sauce on top of the steamed tofu cubes or any sauces you come up with really, it could be spicy or sweet too. It really depends on the flavors you like.

這是我們的迷你三人年夜飯, 翡翠元寶, 鮮蔬金磚, 蒜茸豆苗, 年(糕)年有魚(芋)。

So this is our mini three-person new year's eve dinner, Evergreen Yuan Bao, Veggie Golden Blocks, Garlic Pea Shoots, Nian Nian You Yu (rice cake with taro shaped like fish).

除夕前的暴風雪留下了這個奇特形狀的冰柱長得非常像龍爪, 似乎是來為龍年的最後一天道別。在龍年, 我這小家庭有了不少改變, 今年新年新希望絕對是在私人寫作時間和工作時間上取得更好的平衡, 心裡也盤算著要把這一整年的全素心得好好寫出來和你們分享, 我把大綱都想好了。當然也會恢復替10/10 Apothecary, Malin+Goetz, Hello NYC寫文, 謝謝你們持續的支持。我也還是會在FB粉絲頁持續的分享日常生活。在此祝所有朋友們蛇年行大運, 事事順心, 財源廣進!

The blizzard left a strange icicle by our window on New Year's Eve. It looks sort of like a dragon feet, it's as if the dragon year is saying goodbye on the last day. During the year of dragon, my tiny little family went through quite a few changes in life. My biggest wish for this year is again finding better balance in working and writing. And I really want to share my experiences and thoughts about our vegan journey in the past year, I came up with the general outline already, just gotta sit down and do it. And of course, I will resume working with 10/10 Apothecary, Malin+Goetz Taiwan, and Hello NYC to share my observations of New York, thank you for all of your support. Moss Terrarium 在美國住久了, 也不再是小女孩時, 便會開始關心所謂調養身體還有考慮如果將來要生孩子在美國該怎麼坐月子的問題。在美國不像在台灣有很多的月子中心可以入住, 不用擔心餐點, 也有專人教授一些出院後照顧寶寶的技巧。這些對於住在國外又沒有家人在身邊的眾多媽媽們都是奢侈及夢想。雖然在美國西岸有越來越多的月子中心, 但在紐約及美東還是少的可憐。這幾年在紐約我發現有幾家專門做新鮮月子餐點的店家可以選擇, 這是一個非常大的進步, 因為很多媽媽們之前還是會經由網購從西岸訂購冷凍的月子餐。但新鮮餐點與冷凍餐點還是不同, 畢竟新鮮食材還是最好的 保有更多的養分, 對於媽媽及寶寶也更好。

After living in the states for many years, I stated paying more attention to caring for my health. The reason being I'm no longer a little girl, I've got to take responsibility in what I eat and how the food makes me feel. It is Chinese tradition that one of the most important time for a woman to care for her health is postpartum. For every Chinese girl, the month after giving birth is the golden time to mend the body, to rid of toxins, and to rebuild inner strength and qi for future endeavors. In Taiwan, postpartum care centers are big business, almost all my girl friends have gone to them after giving birth. In these postpartum care center, they prescribe you with special diets which follow the traditional Chinese medicine theory, they help you care for the baby and they also give you baby caring tips during the entire month. This sounds like absolute luxury and a dream for the women giving birth overseas. In the states, there are actually quite a few postpartum care center on the west coast, but there are only a few of them on the east coast. I've noticed in the last couple of years that there have been more and more postpartum meal delivery services, this is good news. And if I ever consider having a baby, I would be able to choose from these services. I know many Chinese women order frozen meals from the west coast, but fresh and frozen are entirely different. Fresh meals will retain more nutrition from the ingredients and much better for the moms and babies.

巧媳婦養生餐的Corinna在六月時從部落格和我聯絡, 問我對於月子餐有沒有興趣試用, 但畢竟我並沒有懷孕也沒有懷孕過的經驗, 所以我一開始是沒有答應的。但後來自己google發現原來除了月子餐之外, 巧媳婦還提供了生理期的調養餐, 我又回頭聯絡了Corinna並表示我想試用的意願, Corinna開心的答應並詳細的介紹了公司理念及餐點給我聽。 巧媳婦的起源如我之前敘述的一樣, 老闆娘也認為紐約真的很少有專門坐月子的服務, 加上她本身一直都喜歡研究養生及月子的部分, 因此經過考量決定創業來服務在紐約的準媽媽們。但女生的調養期不止月子, 所以因此除了月子餐, 老闆娘也設計了生理餐及小產(月子)餐。所有料理的調味都以古法的清淡為主, 讓食材真正的味道當主角, 材料也選擇當季及新鮮的。調味的清淡, 食材的高纖利水也都是為了不要造成五臟六腑的負擔並能讓身體有效排除身體累積的廢物及污血。

Corinna Wu from Cute Mama contacted me in June to see if I was interested in testing their postpartum meals. She read through my blog and knew that I had a huge interest in health-related cuisine so she thought I would be interested. I was not (am not) pregnant and have never been pregnant so I thought I was not a good target audience for their meals so I initially rejected the offer. But after googling a bit, I found out that Cute Mama actually offers something interesting, which is a 4-day diet for women on menstruation. If you follow the thoughts of Chinese medicine, through puberty, during menstrual cycles, postpartum and during menopause are all excellent periods of time for women to rejuvenate their bodies, from inside out. After learning about the menstrual diet, I contacted Corinna again to express my interest in the tasting. She happily replied and also gave me a thorough introduction of the company. The owner of Cute Mama, like me, felt like New York was lacking good postpartum care options. She is an enthusiast in health and have studied quite a bit about postpartum diets. After some thoughts and planning, she opened Cute Mama, with the goal of helping new moms in New York and deliver great postpartum meals. But because the opportunities for women's care does not stop at postpartum, she also designed menus for women going through menstrual cycles and also for women who've had miscarriages. All of the meals are prepared with the traditional thoughts in mind, with light seasoning, to let the main ingredients shine. She also carefully select seasonal and fresh ingredients. The light seasoning and fibrous nature of the meals also create less stress to your digestive systems, liver, gallbladder and kidney so they can properly rid of toxins during these special times.

我今年自從開始吃全素後, 生理期的困擾幾乎都消失了, 但是我還是很好奇調養身體祛寒補氣該吃些什麼。在試用這個生理餐前, 我仔細的和Corinna解釋了我食用全素的想法, 也希望老闆娘能配合我不要使用蛋奶, 她們對我的挑剔要求都一一答應, 也約好在七月讓我使用這為期四天的餐點。除了試用巧媳婦的餐點好不好吃之外, 我也抱著測試自己既有知識的心想看看我平常對於保養身體該使用的食材是不是都還算了解, 看到這些食材時是不是可以認的出來。接下來介紹為期四天的餐點。

Ever since I've started eating vegan, most of my physical discomforts during menstruation have disappeared, but I was still curious if I was caring for myself properly in terms of the Chinese traditional way. Am I giving my body enough "yang" ingredients for it to stay in balance, am I giving my body enough produce that promotes better circulation to boost my "qi"? Before doing the tasting, I explained to Corinna about my vegan diet and thoughts, and I requested the menu to be redesigned into a vegan menu. Not only were they quick to understand my needs, they accommodated all my requests. We decided I would give the four-day diet a shot in July. Besides the main goal, which is to see if Cute Mama provides delicious meals, I also wanted to see if I would recognize the ingredients they use, and if I knew why they added these ingredients for me. It is my goal to know about eating well in both the western ways and the eastern ways. It's all about a balance to me. And now let's take a look at what I had during these four days.

第一天 / Day 1:

早餐有可口清淡的蓮藕粥, 蓮藕有活血的功效, 而且一早起床吃軟性食物對腸胃是非常好的。

Light and savory lotus root with rice porridge for breakfast, lotus root is famous for aiding blood circulation, an excellent vegetable to eat during menstrual cycle. Plus soft food is great for mornings because they are really easy on your digestive systems.

午餐有三品, 份量算蠻大的, 尤其是湯品的部分, 所以我吃了一半, 另一半分給老公吃。其中非常喜歡三彩菠菜中的黑木耳, 還有補氣鍋中的黃芪。

There are three courses for lunch, the serving portion is quite large so I was only able to finish half and gave the other half to my husband. I especially loved the black wood ear mushroom with the spinach and the milk vetch root (a common type of chinese herbal medicine) in the soup, it boosts the Qi in your body.

I could still only finish half of the lunch items today. I had thought the buttery taste from the asparagus was from real butter then I found out it was from vegetable butter. Lots of ingredients in the soup today but it's still light and tasty.

Jujube and walnuts help with blood circulation and inner Qi, with good inner energy, your face would look brighter. It's one of the basic rules of Chinese nutritional theories.

吃完了四天的養生餐, 我覺得口味不錯, 食材也都新鮮, 每天有不同的補氣活血元素, 是絕對可以列入將來如果要坐月子的考慮店家。畢竟都是在紐約, 能每天收到新鮮的食物真的非常加分。另外價格也是合理的, 生理餐有優惠是$160, 四天能吃到這麼多東西其實真的不貴。對於月子餐有興趣的朋友, 30天是$2100, 一個星期是$560, 通常大家都是訂購30天的吧, 也比較划得來。另外小產後要養身的女生也可以考慮訂購餐點, 一個星期是$560, 兩個星期是$1100。如果有興趣的話直接跟Corinna聯絡吧, 至於這次的試吃, 我非常開心又多認識了一個有良心又有品質的公司, 也更仔細的了解要怎麼照顧自己!

After the four-day diet, I feel like the food is quite tasty, the ingredients are fresh, and there are different elements in the meals to boost my qi and help my blood circulation. It is definitely one of the contenders if I were to give birth in the future. The best thing is that Cute Mama is located in New York, being able to receive fresh meals everyday is such a plus. And the price is actually quite reasonable and very comparable to the other services. The four-day meal was $160, it's reasonable considering the amount the food you would get. For postpartum, the 30-day meal is $2100, the 7-day meal is $560. Also, for the women who are trying to mend after miscarriages,the 7-day meal is $560 and the 14-day meal is $1100. If you're interested, contact Corinna directly, she is extremely helpful and sweet. As for me, I'm just glad I tried the diet and got to know a great service!

相信你一定看過草間彌生在日本直島海岸邊的黑黃點點南瓜雕塑, 對於她滿是延續性的鮮艷色彩及圓點圖案也不陌生。

I'm sure you have seen a photo of Yayoi Kusama's black-polka-dot-clad yellow squash sculpture sitting seaside at Naojima, Japan. And you're probably not a stranger to her style of endless dotting pattern intermixed with bright colors.

2012是草間彌生在歐美大放異彩的一年, 在年初時透過網路得知草間彌生在Tate Modern有個完整回顧展的消息後曾一度想飛到倫敦去仔細瞧瞧。但後續發現在夏天將有一系列的Louis Vuitton產品攻佔紐約, 回顧展也會一起跨過大西洋來到紐約的Whitney Museum, 幾個月來就一直引頸期盼。

2012 is the year of Yayoi Kusama in the US and in Europe. I found out that there was a Yayoi Kusama retrospective show at Tate Modern at the beginning of the year. Completely excited, I almost flew to London just to see the show. But then after a couple months, I found out that Kusama was collaborating with Louis Vuitton to launch a complete collection that was launching in New York in the summer. Along with this limited edition line, the retrospective that was on exhibit at Tate Modern was going to travel across the Atlantic to come to New York as well. I couldn't be MORE excited.

Louis Vuitton的藝術總監Marc Jacobs在2006年第一次和草間彌生會面, 當場被深深吸引, 且認為草間的作品帶有濃濃的天真氣息。60年代草間彌生在紐約時名氣不小於Andy Warhol, 也在時尚界非常的活躍, 甚至在1968年曾發表同名品牌, 當時也被紐約的媒體成為圓點公主。但也許比較少人知道的是, 今年已經83歲的草間彌生其實從青少年時期就一直為幻覺所苦, 常從雙眼中看到充滿了圓點及色差強烈的世界, 而這個缺陷卻是成就了她這些無造作作品的最大推手。在紐約的創作生涯雖然亮麗, 但經歷摯友過世後便處於精神狀態不穩定及極度憂鬱的狀況下, 幻覺比之前更加嚴重, 在1973年決定返回日本的療養院長住。在療養院附近蓋了一個大型工作室後, 至今不曾停止創作。今年在Marc Jacobs與Louis Vuitton的精心策劃之下, 合作推出了一整個系列的包鞋衣款, 也在快半世紀之後, 再度引起時尚界的關注。

Marc Jacobs, Creative Director of Louis Vuitton, had a meeting with Yayoi Kusama for the first time in 2006. He was captivated by her on the spot and utterly impressed by the innocent air about her work. Back in the 60s, Yayoi Kusama was almost as famous as Andy Warhol in New York. She was also extremely active in the fashion world, launched her own line in 1968 and was crowned the polka-dot princess by the press. But what most people don't know is that the now 83 year old Kusama has been suffering from hallucinations her entire life since her teen years. She would often see the world in bright contrasty colors with dots and squiggly shapes all over. However, this illness also helped developed her world-famous style and aesthetics in a huge way. While she was in New York, her work earned much admiration, but the death of her best friend set her into severe depression. By 1973, she decided to move back to Japan permanently to live in an institution (she still lives there). After building a large studio close to the institution, she never stopped producing new work. And this year, with thoughtful planning by Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton, Kusama returns to the fashion scene after almost half a century with a full collaborated collection of bags, shoes and ready-to-wear pieces.

7月10號兩個Louis Vuitton x Kusama的pop-up store在紐約的第五大道及Soho區開幕, 不但吸引了眾多藝人名流, 紐約客及觀光客也都為之瘋狂。草間的圓點覆蓋了第五大道的整棟建築物, 窗口也精心設計了裝置藝術。店內有著整個系列的產品, 但價位很高, 包括我在內大部分的人只是當藝術品看, 相信有入手的朋友們也會細心珍藏。Pop-up store除了在紐約有兩個店家, 在日本的新宿及銀座, 香港及新加坡都分別有據點, 而最後的兩家則會在8月於巴黎及倫敦開幕。

On July 10th, two Louis Vuitton x Kusama pop-up store opened their doors in New York's fifth avenue flagship and the Soho location. The openings attracted a large number of celebrities, New Yorkers and tourists. Kusama's famous dots covered the entire building on fifth avenue, the windows have also been dressed with conceptual installations. Of course, in the store, you could view the entire Louis Vuitton x Kusama collection, but the prices are sky high. Most people, including me, were looking at these pieces as art, and I'm sure the ones that bought the pieces will treasure them as art as well. There will be a total of 8 pop-up store around the world, besides the two in New York, there will be two in Japan (Shinjuku and Ginza), one in Hong Kong, one in Singapore and the last two will open in August in Paris and London.

跟隨著Louis Vuitton旋風來到紐約的, 也是我本身最期待的, 就是在Whitney Museum的草間彌生回顧展。除了有一個空間呈現出60年代時她在紐約的半糜爛波希米亞生活之外, 還有各年代中不同風格的作品。

Arriving in New York alongside the Louis Vuitton collection, and what got me really excited, was the retrospective that is now on exhibition at Whitney Museum. Besides a dedicated space that told a story about her 60s wild bohemia life in New York, the show includes her work from different decades showcasing different sensibility.

整個展覽涵蓋了草間一生的作品, 對於不太瞭解草間的人, 這是一個很棒的展覽。草間的作品最讓人驚訝的是它們呈現出的活力及生命力, 讓參訪者會誤以為草間是個熱情的人, 這也是為什麼很少人能把她的內向與她的作品聯想在一起。但歷史證明大部分內向的藝術家通常在心中都有多層次的感受, 當然草間也不例外。

The exhibition showcase the pieces from Yayoi Kusama's entire life as an artist, for people who aren't familiar with Kusama, this is an excellent exhibition. What's unique about Kusama's work is how lively and energetic they are, any one who's seen them would probably imagine an outgoing person behind the work. Not many could link her quiet nature to her work. But, as proven many times in the the history of art, the introverted artists often have really complex layers of emotions that are expressed explicitly in their work. Kusama definitely belongs in this group.

最後介紹的是由Whitney, Gagosian, 還有Hudson River Park Trust共同贊助的戶外裝置藝術, 在西村河邊的Pier 45, 草間來到紐約時也有去現場查看裝置情形。紅底白點的雕塑成群覆蓋了綠地, 天氣好去河邊散步的朋友們不容錯過。

The last Yayoi Kusama exhibition in New York this summer would be the outdoor installation sponsored by Whitney Museum, Gagosian and the Hudson River Park Trust located at Pier 45. As you can see, Kusama visited the installation when she came to the opening of the exhibitions. The bright red, polka-dot-clad irregular shaped sculptures covered the entire grass field in the park, what a beautiful sight this would be on a sunny day and it's definitely not to be missed.

舊金山番外篇 (下) / Hello, San Francisco! Part 2 New York Raves No.8上一篇介紹過舊金山的時尚旅館Clift之後, 接下來就要帶著各位讀者跟我一起以觀光客的心情走踏這個灣區城市。

In the previous post, I introduced the fashionable Clift hotel, and now I'm gonna take you through my journey as a tourist at the gorgeous bay city.

第一站來到舊金山鼎鼎有名的反主流書店-City Light/城市之光。這是50年代披頭文化(Beat Generarion)及披頭族(Beatnik)活躍的場所。披頭文學主要以Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs與Allen Ginsberg為主軸發展出來, 以不受拘束, 自發性創造力與拒絕社會線條捆綁的態度為中心。來到城市之光單純的為了朝聖並享受在這個有歷史聲音的地點翻翻書, 並充分感受這個輕鬆的空間。

Our first stop is the infamous independent bookstore - City Light. This was the hot spot in the 50s for the Beatniks and the birth place for the Beat Generation. This genre of literature is usually referred to as The Beats and is centered around the work of Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. This wave of thoughts capsulized free-will, self-inspired creativity, and the will to refuse conformity with society. City Light was on our must-visit list simply because we wanted to visit the place that made history and created impact to American literature. We get to experience being inside of the bookstore, reading and flipping through poetry in a mellow and relaxing environment.

從書局出來後一路沿著中國城逛回旅館, 梳洗之後便前往Tartine Bakery的同名餐廳Bar Tartine用晚餐。這裡每一道菜都是創新, 充分利用當地當季的食材。我們點了幾個手工的醃菜試試, 第一次嘗到醃漬入味且不帶土味的甜菜根及胡蘿蔔, 主菜的燉煮豬肉及煎魚也都非常可口。當然這裡的佐餐麵包也是來自於Tartine Bakery的, 沒有時間前去Tartine Bakery的我們也就在這裡放開心的品嘗香軟的手工麵包。吃飽喝足我們便回旅館休憩期待接下來兩天的行程。

After our short trip to the bookstore, we walked through Chinatown and window-shopped all the way back to the hotel. After a change of clothes, we headed out to Bar Tartine for dinner. I'm sure many of you have heard of the famed Tartine Bakery, yup, Bar Tartine is its sister restaurant! All of the dishes here are innovative and fully incorporated the local and seasonal ingredients. We ordered a few types of pickles, definitely my first time having carrot and beet pickles that aren't bitter or overtly earthy. Our braised short rib and seared fish entrees are both delicious as well. And of course, the bread basket is filled with freshly baked bread from Tartine Bakery, if you have no time to visit Tartine Bakery, you get to taste the deliciousness here. After a satisfying dinner, we went back to the hotel for some R&R to prepare for all the things we want to do in the next two days.

舊金山有大量的的廣東移民, 因此這裡的港式飲茶特別道地。我們選擇了雖然價格比較貴但受到不同朋友及網站推薦的Yank Sing/羊城。愛餃如我點了一整桌不同口味的蒸餃煎餃, 另一半點了一籠想念已久的小籠包, 配上燙菜心, 好飽好滿足。我私心推薦豆苗蒸餃, 太好吃了。

There are a large number of Cantonese immigrants in San Francisco, so the Dim Sum here is known for its authenticity, and of course we had to try it! We picked the pricier but really highly recommended Yank Sing. As a true-dumpling lover, I ordered a table full of different dumplings, and my better-half ordered his favorite, soup dumplings. Along with blanched choy sum, this meal was incredibly fulfilling. And I personally recommend the snow pea shoot steamed dumplings, they were truly delicate and tasty.

在羊城用過午餐後我們步行前往Ferry Building, 這個在灣區大橋旁的美食聖殿在每週六都有超優質的農夫市場。知道我瘋農夫市場的朋友們應該都不難想像我有多興奮, 恨不得把所有看到的好食材通通搬回紐約。在紐約看不到的新鮮猴頭菇讓我垂涎不已, 錐形的高麗菜也讓我看得咋舌。

After Yank Sing, we walked a few blocks to the Ferry Building. This gourmet heaven located right by the Bay Bridge has a incredible farmer's market every Saturday. If you know how much I LOVE farmer's market, you could probably imagine how excited I was to be able to walk in it, touch and smell everything. I literally wished I could pack up all of the fresh ingredients and take them home to New York. Especially the fresh Lion's Mane mushroom that I've never seen in New York, as well as cone-shaped young cabbage.

而Ferry Building的裡面更是匯集了美食及好店家。特別多種類的Far West Fungi菇麕專賣店, 全素食的Pepples甜甜圈, 手工司康餅, ACME手工麵包, 義式香腸專賣店, Happy Girl Kitchen Co. 的醃漬泡菜, 美麗的Heath Ceramics陶瓷品, 灣區有名的甜點店Miette, 甚至還看到了茶葉蛋。我們逛得不亦樂乎並充分享受了當觀光客的感覺。

The Ferry building is also a central location for great eats and shopping. To name some, Far West Fungi is a specialized mushroom store that sells double digit variety of mushrooms, Pepples make really delicious vegan donuts, an amazing homemade scone stand, ACME bakery, Italian sausage specialty store, Happy Girl Kitchen Co. with their amazing pickles and kimchi, Heath Ceramics with their sturdy and minimalist dinnerware, the west coast popular pastry store, Miette, and I even saw a stand selling Chinese tea eggs! We truly enjoyed walking through the entire hall and got a kick out of being tourists.

下午搭乘Bart來到Mission區, 先到僅此一家的Four Barrel咖啡停駐半個小時啜飲由他們親自烘培的咖啡豆製成的手沖咖啡。並開心的看到了純手工超小量生產的Dandelion Chocolate, 與手沖咖啡搭配起來成了完美的組合。

In the afternoon, we took the Bart to get to the Mission district. First stop at Mission was the one and only Four Barrel cafe, for half an hour of rest and some quality time to sip on their house-roasted coffee. I was also pleasantly surprised by the small-batch chocolate from Dandelion Chocolate, and yes, it went really well with the coffee.

Mission除了有驚人完整的塗鴉牆面, 更是走逛小店的好場所。喜歡Voyager的獨特個性商品, Paxton Gate的可愛玩具, Mission Bicycle Company的腳踏車及相關商品, 在Aldea喜見獨特家飾用品及之前曾寫過文的Forage Ties, 還巧遇Her Majesty’s Secret Beekeeper養蜂達人店中的鎮店寵物公雞。要離開Mission區前還意猶未盡。

Besides the incredible graffitis on the walls in the Mission, this entire district is filled with stylish boutiques. I love the unique garments and accessories from Voyager, adored the lovely toys from Paxton Gate, drooled over the bikes and accessories at Mission Bicycle Company, discovered one-of-a-kind home wares at Aldea, including Forage Ties, which I've written about before, and met the pet cock at beekeeping specialty store, Her Majesty’s Secret Beekeeper. All I can say is we had too little time for such an area, but I vow to return in the future.

而晚餐選擇了環境舒適, 能品茶、能安心聊天、且能細嘗養生料理的Samovar茶屋。兩人對於茶的質地及養生餐的美味驚嘆不已, 這是我們都會想要再次回來靜坐品茶品食的場所。

After leaving Mission, we stopped by Samovar for dinner. Samovar is a relaxing teahouse that also focused on serving healthy and vegan bites. We were both astounded by the quality and large variety of tea they serve and how tasty our dinner was. It's a definite must-return spot and if I lived in SF, this would definitely be one of my go-to spots for tea and some light and healthy bites.

飯後甜點來到了Smitten急凍冰淇淋, 是使用分子料理的原理作出的冰淇淋, 客人點選之後才一球一球製作, 非常有趣。口味不錯也適合想嘗鮮的朋友前往。而在這個叫做Hayes Valley的區域有很多精品店、藝廊、特色餐廳還有在戶外的Biergarten(戶外啤酒屋)可以聊天品酒, 非常值得花點時間走走。

Post dinner dessert had to be Smitten, a tiny ice cream shop that serves instant-freeze ice cream. Using the techniques from molecular gastronomy, all of Smitten's ice cream is made to order, it's amazing fun to watch. The ice cream are good and for anyone who's never tried it, it's a must. Smitten is located in Hayes Valley, an area that boasts boutique shops, art galleries and quality restaurants. There is also an outdoor Biergarten for beer-tasting and some fun time with friends. This is definitely an area that's worth spending your time at, another area that I must return in the future.

週日是半工作性質的一天, 但還是安排前去品嘗B Star Bar的緬甸料理。灑了肉桂糖粉的印度煎餅還有緬甸獨特的茶葉沙拉都非常的美味, 沒有嘗過茶葉沙拉請注意這是一個辣度蠻高的沙拉。

Sunday was our half working day, but we still squeezed in a good Burmese lunch at B Star Bar. I picked this place because I was curious about their famous tea leaf salad. I have to say, both the tea leaf salad and cinnamon sugar platha were incredible. For all of you who's never had a Burmese tea leaf salad, please note that the spicy level on this salad is quite high.

在午餐後去Golden Gate Park/金門公園散步便前去開會並打包準備飛回紐約了。這次的舊金山行很短但也非常豐富, 下次要好好的計劃並多留幾天好和在加州的朋友們一一會面。我們會再回來的, 謝謝你, 舊金山, for a great adventure。

After lunch and a short stroll at Golden Gate Park, we went to our work meeting and packed our stuff for our flight back to New York. This SF trip was a whirlwind and too short, next time we would spend more days on a trip so we get to meet up with all our friends in Cali. We shall return, San Francisco, thanks for a great adventure!

蝦夷蔥是在西方料理中常見的配角, 但你看過蝦夷蔥的花嗎? 一球一球的紫色圓朵, 光是觀賞就令人舒心。

Chives is often seen on dishes as decoration or the sidekick, have you ever seen chives blossom? Rounds and rounds of lilac, they brighten up the mood effortlessly.

你知道蝦夷蔥的花也是可以食用的嗎? 花苞可炒,花朵可泡製美麗淡粉紅色的醋,花瓣可當作香草食用撒在沙拉上加入炒蛋中。

Did you know chives blossoms are edible? The bulbs could be stir-fried, whole flowers can be used to make beautiful light pink chive vinegar, the petals can be used as an herb in salad or in scrambled eggs.

兩個星期前帶回了一大束的蝦夷蔥花後, 我迅速的自己製作了蔥花的醋。把10-12朵的蔥花清洗乾淨後, 取一個空瓶浸入米醋或是白醋, 兩個星期後就可以收成了。在此我用的是有機玄米醋。

After brining home a huge bouquet of chives blossom two weeks ago, I quickly made some chives blossom vinegar. It's really simple. Take 10-12 blossoms and clean well, put them in an empty jar and soak them in your vinegar, be it white vinegar, rice vinegar or champagne vinegar. I'm using organic brown rice vinegar here. After two weeks of soaking/infusing, the vinegar would be ready to use.

三天後醋已經被花染成美麗的粉紅色, 醋也散發出清香的蔥味。好神奇啊。 這種大自然給我們的禮物, 和人工味素色素絕不能相提並論。兩個星期後變成深桃紅色, 將花朵取出後, 蝦夷蔥花醋就可以如正常的醋一般的使用了喔!

The vinegar already turned a pretty pale pink after three days and the vinegar has been infused with a light chive scent, magical. The gift from nature can never be put in the same category as artificial flavoring the coloring. Straining the blossoms after two weeks, the chives blossom vinegar is ready to use just as your regular vinegar!

在炎熱的一天, 我自製蕎麥麻醬涼麵當作晚餐, 在拌入許多當季的嫩苗時蔬的涼麵上最後撒上了一圈蝦夷蔥花瓣。花瓣帶點辛辣, 但非常清淡, 和涼麵一起食用讓口感又多了一個層次, 我非常喜歡並且也貫徹了我儘量吃全食的心。全食的理念就是運用整個食材能食用的部分, 而蝦夷蔥花絕對是可以食用的, 所以不浪費的加入料理中嘍!

On a hot day, I made tahini sauce cold soba for dinner. After mixing in the various micro vegetables and seasonal greens to the noodles, I sprinkled the chive blossom petals on the dish. The blossoms has a light onion taste to it, a bit spicy but not overwhelming at all. It added another layer of flavor to the soba noodles, which I absolutely loved. On top of that, I stuck to my mentality of eating whole foods. Eating whole foods meaning using all of the ingredient's edible parts in your cooking, and yes, not only are chives edible, their blossoms are definitely edible.

舊金山番外篇 (上) / Hello, San Francisco! Part 1 New York Raves No.7

在早春走訪了舊金山一趟。距離上一次真正在舊金山當個觀光客已經20年了吧, 當時還是個小女孩, 和全家一起出國, 一個字的英文也看不懂傻傻的跟著導遊走。這次因為工作關係也放自己個小週末, 興致憧憧的把想吃和想看的通通做了筆記就出發了。天公作美在我們造訪的這個週末給了灣區非常溫暖及漂亮的天氣, 連當地人都說一年中也許只有15天是這樣的好天氣呢。

We took a mini vacation in San Francisco in the early Spring. The last time I was really playing a tourist in San Francisco was probably 20 years ago. I was still a little girl, with my family, with not a word of English, following the tour guide around. Thanks to work, we got to steal a tiny weekend trip to the west coast. After some research and planning of the things I wanted to see and eat, we took off for the bay area. We also totally got lucky with the weather, it was probably the most sunny and warm weekend San Fran has seen in months! Even the locals told us we lucked out, and they probably only have 15 super nice days in a year, and we got to experience 2 of them.

在計劃每一個行程時, 我最注重的其中一項就是旅館。搜尋中找到了屬於Morgans Hotel GroupClift hotel。Morgans Hotel Group在紐約就有特別的Hudson Hotel及Mondrian Hotel, 於是看到了同屬一個集團的Clift Hotel就決定訂房。果然一到旅館就看到別出心裁的設計, 在每一個角落都有一張特別的椅子, 也是客人都非常喜歡的點綴。

Before going on any trip, the one thing I care about the most is the hotel. While doing my research, I came across Clift hotel, which belongs to the trendy Morgans Hotel Group. I know of the Morgans Hotel Group because of their two beautiful locations in New York, Hudson Hotel and Mondrian Hotel. So to see that they have a hotel in San Francisco as well, I decided to make a reservation right away. And of course we see thoughtful and playful design inside and out once we've arrived. The hotel is most famous for the different chairs and seating areas around the entire property, and this feature is definitely one of the guest favorites.

每一層樓的電梯口貼心的放了全身大圓鏡, 出門時可確認妝容。整個客房區也都是以柔和的淡紫及溫暖的米黃色做層次設計。讓不大的客房區有浪漫的空氣感。

An oversized round mirror is placed in front of the elevators on every floor, very nice way to check if you're ready for town. The cozy guest room area is decorated with shades of soft lilac and warm beige in layers, it creates a romantic feeling.

房內的座椅及燈飾都是精心挑選的, 從天花板一直垂墜至地板的裝飾簾拉高了房間也帶了點溫柔的感覺。女孩們應該非常喜歡吧!

The chairs and lamps in the room are carefully selected, floor to ceiling decorative curtains soften the atmosphere and brings in the feeling of a retreat. I bet this is really popular with girls!

So I was happy to see the entire toiletry kit provided at Clift, before leaving for San Francisco, I noticed that they include my favorites, the peppermint shampoo and the vitamin b5 body moisturizer, so I left my pre-packed toiletry kit at home in New York.

房內有雙向的超大鏡面, 製造出無限鏡面的假象, 也放大了房間, 而我玩的不亦樂乎。房間內有Bose音響的配備, 插上iPod或iPhone就可以馬上有自己熟悉的音樂了。

In the guest room, there are two facing over-sized mirrors, creating the illusion of inception and gave more volume to the room itself. And of course, I had tons of fun photographing. There is also a Bose speaker for your iPod or iPhone, setting the mood in the room with your own music is at a snap.

在旅館Lobby出名的Great Chair是所有旅客排隊照相的地方。坐上去會突然以為自己是愛麗絲喝下了變小的藥水, 非常有趣。Clift Hotel 除了房間住的舒服外, 也有舊金山潮男潮女在週末夜喜歡小酌幾杯的Redwood Room, 到了週末是異常的熱鬧。除了夜生活之外, 旅館在每一個角落都貼心的設計一些客人可以靜靜休息的空間, 甚至還有西洋棋盤可以和對手好好比試一番。

The Great Chair in the lobby is an ultra attraction for photo-op. Everyone feels like Alice after the shrinking potion in The Wonderland, it's a load of fun. Besides comfy guest rooms, the Clift hotel hosts one of the most popular weekend night spot, Redwood Room, which attracts chic locals and out-of-towners. Also, one of the very special feature of the hotel is all the hidden nooks. There are hidden chairs and seating areas to allow private conversation all over the lobby. And if you're up for it, chess and backgammon tables are also free for guests. I imagine a pair of guests playing chess with a nightcap before heading back to the room.

Clift Hotel雖然離所有的交通工具都非常的近, 也在Union Square(購物天堂)的旁邊, 但周圍晚上的治安並不是上等。若是單獨出遊的女孩們可要特別的注意喔。除了晚上不要亂跑之外, 我非常推薦這個旅館, 客服人員也都非常的有禮貌及親切。問我下次會不會在入住Clift? 答案是肯定的。

Clift Hotel is close to all of the public transportation, and it's right by Union Square, but I wouldn't exactly call the area safe during the night. Girls, please pay extra attention if you're traveling alone. Besides a little caution needed during the night time, I actually highly recommend this hotel. All the receptions and bellhops couldn't be more polite and helpful. And would I stay there again? Definitely.

Save Food From the Refrigerator是一個概念深厚資料俱全的作品, 也是Jihyun Ryou在荷蘭艾恩霍芬設計學院的畢業作品。你有沒有想過其實我們的冰箱在慢性謀殺我們的蔬果? 其實在沒有冰箱的時代, 早就有有口耳相傳的妙招保存不同的蔬果。Jihyun Ryou結合了這些傳統飲食保存學問及她精湛的視覺概念作出了這一系列在家中以不同方法保存不同蔬果的好設計。

Save Food From the Refrigerator is a conceptual and well-researched project, it's also Jihyun Ryou's thesis project from the famed Design Academy of Eindhoven. Have you ever thought about the fact that our fridge slowly kill our produce? In the era of no refrigeration, there have been tips in fruit and vegetable preservation. Jihyun Ryou combined this knowledge with her exquisite visual design sensibilities to create this beautiful design project to save food from your fridge.

This is a conceptual idea and not a product sold in store. On top of this, Jihyun had no intention in asking people to abandon their refrigerators. Instead, this project is like a reminder for people to buy "just enough" of produce. The transparent nature of these containers allow people to gauge how much they have at home with just one glance and it makes continuous observation of the produce super simple. The best part is that Jihyun reminded all of us to not forget the knowledge from grandmothers, and she also inspired a bunch of friends to share their own preservation tips.

自己做鹽麴 / Shio Koji at Home

在日本風靡全國的鹽麴, 其實做法真的很簡單, 但麻煩的是找到好品質的米麴。米麴帶有活菌, 是製作醬油,味噌,日本甜酒及許多不同日常廚房佐料的酵母。

The greatly popular condiment in Japan, shio koji, is extremely simple to make, the hard part is to locate great quality koji. Koji is fermented rice, a live culture, and the base of soy sauce, miso, amazaki and many other everyday condiments.

米麴有分普通白米麴或玄米麴。我去年在Whole Foods發現了在美國麻州利用古法製作味噌的South River Miso後, 就持續的購入他們的味噌。但後來發現原來還可以從他們的網站購買玄米麴, 我便馬上下了訂單。

Koji is usually made with white rice but it could also be made with brown rice. I discovered South River Miso last year at Whole Foods and found out that they follow the real traditional methods in making miso with superior quality ingredients. I have been a huge fan since. I then later found out that they also sell brown rice koji through their website so I placed an order right away to get some koji on hand.

1 oz. natural sea salt

在家裡煮食與外食最不同的地方便是每一道程序及每一個醬料你都能自己掌控。所有由口入胃的料理都會影響我們的生理及心理狀態。因此在家煮食時在食材上澆滿了加了味素及複雜化學成分的市售醬汁, 和外食其實是沒有差別的... 自己想辦法用簡單的醬油醋香料及薑蒜調出最合家人胃口的醬汁, 才是王道。因為理解這點, 我連鹽都堅持只用海鹽, 玫瑰鹽及灰鹽。

The difference in cooking at home and eating out is that you could decide what to do every step of the process and select all of the ingredients yourself. All bites that are going in our mouths could affect our physical and mental conditions. So if you cook at home and still doused the food with store bought MSG and chemical-filled sauces, it's pretty much the same as eating out... Figuring out how to make condiments and sauces that fit the palette of your family is really the way to go. Because I understand this, I insist on using only sea salt, himalayan salt or grey salt.

fermented for 7 days

找到了好品質的玄米麴和鹽, 鹽麴的做法就真的再簡單不過了。因為第一次試做所以我做了非常的少量, 但我家兩口子也用了超過一個半月了。找一個容器(我選擇用最衛生乾淨的玻璃罐)加入100克的玄米麴, 30克的鹽, 搓揉混合約5分鐘後加入100cc的溫水, 接下來就等它在常溫中發酵完成了(請看分解步驟)。蓋上容器蓋子時記得留一個小縫隙讓空氣能混合入內幫助鹽麴製造好菌。每天都要充分混合一次, 約7天到10天就會熟成, 我是在初春製作, 那時還有一點涼所以熟成花了8天。鹽麴熟成後就可放入冰箱冷藏保存。完成後鹽麴應該會融化開來米的形狀看不太見, 也會有很棒的穀香及少許酸酸的養樂多味道。因為我用的是玄米麴所以熟成後還是有點米粒的形狀, 檢討後發現下次製作前先研磨一下可能會讓鹽麴質地更細緻。

After acquiring the brown rice koji and salt, it's time to make some shio koji, and it couldn't be simpler. Because it was my first time so I made a very small batch, but the two of us have used it for over a month and a half. First decide where you'd like your shio koji to ferment and live, I picked a Weck glass jar because it's the most sanitary. Add to the container 3 oz. of brown rice koji and 1 oz. of salt, mix it together with your hands for 5 minutes, rub them together so they mix well and even break down a little. After 5 minutes, pour in 1/2 cup of luke warm water and that's it!(see clear instruction here) Keep the container in room temperature with a lid but leave a sliver of opening for air to go in the shio koji and help with the fermentation process. Mix the shio koji thoroughly once everyday until it's done fermenting. It takes about 7-10 days on the counter to be fermented depending on the temperature. I made it in early April and the weather was still a bit chilly so it took my shio koji 8 days to finish fermenting. Once it's done fermenting, you could close the container and move it into the fridge to keep. When the shio koji is done, the rice bran should have broken down a lot, to a point where the shape of rice grains is almost gone. And it's as if the grains dissolved a little, the shio koji would smell almost like yeast bread, yogurt and delicious. I used brown rice koji so even when it was done the grains can be seen quite well. I've searched for solutions and decided that in the next batch I should coarse grind the koji a bit before fermentation just so I could have a smoother consistency in the shio koji.

鹽麴是活的, 所以熟成後放入冰箱可以用非常的久, 但也請不要放個兩年都沒有用。怎麼用鹽麴呢? 平常煮菜你在哪裡用到鹽都可以用鹽麴代替。我發現鹽麴讓簡單的炒青菜都變的好甜, 也能在煮飯時加一茶匙入飯裡讓飯更香, 其他還有各種食譜例如麵包, 醃漬, 醬汁, 任何可能性都有。

Shio koji is a living condiment. After fermentation, it would last for a very long time in the fridge, but please don't make it and forget it in the fridge for 2 years. How do we use shio koji? Whenever you need to add salt to your dish, replace it with shio koji. I use it a lot in stir-fry because it makes the vegetables taste super sweet. Some people add a teaspoon to cooking rice to make the rice more flavorful. There are also tons of recipes such as adding it in bread, pickles and sauces. There are endless possibilities.

我瘋著做鹽麴真正的理由其實很簡單, 我們人體的免疫力70%來自腸道健康。這也是為什麼近年來酵素及益生菌這麼的火紅, 但與其一直依靠藥粒, 其實在生活中就可以天天都加入天然的益生菌。它可以來自任何發酵的東西, 醋, 鹽麴, 泡菜, 天然優格等等的。這幾年在廚房玩出了強大的興趣, 我也認為能照顧好我家兩口的健康比工作上任何的表獎更來得優成就感, 畢竟健康才能做更多的事。寫著寫著發現鹽麴快用完了, 該是重新製作新的一罐啦!

The reason for me to rave about shio koji and decided to make it myself is really simple - 70% of our immunity comes from our intestinal health. That's the biggest reason why digestive enzymes and probiotics are this popular lately. But instead of relying on pills, we can add probiotics to our diet everyday. It could come from anything naturally fermented, such as vinegar, shio koji, pickles/kimchi, dairy or non-dairy yogurt, etc. I've been having so much fun in the kitchen the past few years, I just see it as my playground now. And I actually think being able to take care of our health is more satisfying than any awards on a job. Because staying healthy allow us to do more things and dream bigger. And yup, I just realized the shio koji is running low, time to make a new batch!

農夫市場的豔麗牡丹,帶回家了!Gorgeous peonies brought home from farmer's market! 母親節到了, 在這一天, 有沒有想好要怎麼回報媽媽的辛勞或是怎麼體貼另一半呢? 若是在紐約, 晚春初夏天氣宜人, 這次除了推薦幾個可以閤家一起參加幾個非常有趣的戶外活動外, 也帶給各位一些寵愛媽媽或寵愛自己的好地方。

Mother's day is here, have you thought about how to treat your mom or your better-halves? If you're in New York, the late Spring weather is perfect for long strolls. For that reason, I'm going to recommend a few outdoor activities along with some classic treats that you could consider to spoil the moms and yourselves.

在四季分明的北美東部, 一年只有六個月溫暖的時間, 這段時間內便有很多的市集可以走逛。

In the Northeast, there is only about 6 months of warm weather, and during this time, there are a lot of outdoor markets and street fairs to visit.

1. Hester Street Fair Essex Street, New York, NY 10002

Hester Street Fair是在紐約很潮的下東城每個星期六開市的二手/手作市集及吃食市場。4月28日開幕後, 一直到10月27日在每一個週六都會讓下東城熱鬧非凡。這是一個非常適合與家人渡過熱鬧歡樂週六日的市集, 有得吃也有得逛, 順便去找找送給她的特別禮物也是很不錯的選擇喔。

Hester Street Fair is a weekly flea/food market that's located in the trendy lower east side in Manhattan. The market season began on Saturday 04/28 and will continue to bring festivities to the LES every Saturday until 10/27. This is a street fair that's great for families to go together on a weekenedsince there is shopping to be done and bites to be had. Stopping by the fair alone to look up a special gift is not a bad idea either.

2. New Amsterdam Market 224 Front Street, New York NY 10038

New Amsterdam Market是一個週日農夫市集, 位於曼哈頓南端的South Street Seaport(原本是紐約最活躍的漁港), 和Hester Street Fair一樣也是在溫暖的季節才會開市。但它特別的是幾乎週日都會有獨一無二的活動, 例如4月29日開市時就有一個知名麵包師傅完全利用當地穀類麵粉烘培的麵包祭, 在今年的母親節也會有一個漁市集重生的特別企劃。加上周邊非常特別的店家及餐廳, 在紐約的話適合週日閑逸的散步, 順便買些當季食材給家人做頓飯吧。

New Amsterdam Market is a weekly farmer's market that happens on Sundays. It's located at the south east of Manhattan in South Street Seaport, which in the old days used to be one of the most active seaport and fish market. Just like Hester Street Fair, New Amsterdam Market only opens during the warmer seasons, but it's unique because of the special events. On the opening day of 04/29, the Bread Pavilion was presented along with the usual vendors. The Bread Pavilion gathered 15 local bakers to present unique loaves of bread made with the flour from locally grown grains. And on Mother's day, there is a fish market revival special event to bring back the old soul of the seaport. Along with the cafes, restaurants and boutique stores, the market is really perfect for a Sunday afternoon. And perhaps you could pick up some ingredients and make a meal for the loved ones.

3. Smorgasburg 27 N. 6 St. (btw. Kent Ave. + East River), Brooklyn, NY

Smorgasburg位於布魯克林的威廉堡(Williamsburg)區。一週一次, 大量的飲食攤位聚集在這個河邊的戶外空間, 很多的攤位都是別的市集找不到的, 愛吃的人不能錯過。威廉堡是紐約現今年輕才子才女都為之傾倒的潮流聖地。近幾年好逛的小店, 手工食品店及一些非常棒的餐廳一一開張。所以除了Smorgasburg外, 帶著心愛的人走走, 不一定能一起發掘屬於你們的驚喜。

Smorgasburg happens in Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Once a week on Sunday, large number of food vendors gather in the outdoor area by the East River. Many of the these food items can only be found at Smorgasburg, if you love food, definitely don't miss this. Williamsburg is also the most happening area right now for creatives and fashion-seekers. Boutiques, specialty food stores and incredible restaurants opened by the dozens in the past few years. So besides stopping by at the Smorgasburg, walk around Williamsburg as well, you might just find an adventure together.

Le Parker Meridien has a famous brunch place called Norma's. Late last year they also opened a all-in-one beauty floor called Underground. There is drybar that give you a killer blowdry, there is Moonshine for some heavenly facial, there is 10 | 10 for beautifying your digits, and there is Petit Bluedogcafe for some healthy organic juice, salads and light meals. On Mother's Day, there is a special offer to enjoy all four places. Take advantage of this and spoil your mama!
