在台灣很多人最期待的就是農曆新年, 不但能有長長的年假出國旅遊, 還能和家人朋友一起團聚圍爐。而在美國, 年底類似台灣的農曆新年一樣的3個節日包括了11月底的感恩節, 12月的聖誕節及年末的跨年。雖然每一個節日的重點都不同但重要性幾乎是不相上下。

In Taiwan, the most anticipated holiday is the lunar New Year. Most people have a week worth of vacation and a lot of travel plans and family gatherings are planned during this time of year. In the US, there are three holidays that are similar to the lunar New Year – Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year. Although the focus of these holidays tend to differ, they share equal weight of importance.

感恩節是個歡慶豐收的節日, 因此總是在秋收的11月底並有四天的連假。大部分的美國人不論出生於哪一州幾乎都是離開家鄉工作,所以這4天的連假也是回家探望親人的好時機。除了探親, 豐盛的感恩節大餐也是重點。當然在美國人種國裔眾多, 所以每一個家庭都會有自己獨門的料理, 連最基本的烤火雞都能有很多不同的風味。光是把迷迭香, 鼠尾草, 百里香這三個烤火雞必用的香草換成薑黃及小茴香等香料或醬油及冰糖等醬料就能創造出獨一無二的烤火雞。在感恩節的這一天, 在廚房裡佈滿的幸福的香味, 有派皮餡料的滋滋甜味, 蔓越莓凍的果香酸味, 還有地瓜泥及馬鈴薯泥加入牛油酸奶的濃郁乳香。這一道道的料理也是把一家人及朋友們齊聚一起大快朵頤的魔法。除了美味大餐之外, 感恩節也是採買聖誕禮物最重要的時候。感恩節隔天的星期五在美國俗稱Black Friday(黑色星期五), 這一天的折扣及營業時間就好比台灣百貨公司中的週年慶。知名百貨及大型商場在太陽還沒升起就開門, 到午夜才會關門, 而且幾乎所有的商品都附帶極好的折扣。有計畫的人常在BlackFriday之前就先列出需要採買的聖誕禮物或家中必需品好在當天進商場掃貨。

Thanksgiving is a celebration for the autumn harvest and it’s the reason why it always falls at the end of harvest season in November. There is usually at least four days off from work or school during Thanksgiving. In the US, no matter where you’re from, most people work or live away from their parents and extended families, so Thanksgiving is always the perfect time to go home for a big family gathering. Besides getting together, Thanksgiving feast is also a huge deal. There are so many different races and nationalities in the US so every family has a different Thanksgiving feast. Even with the the basic roast turkey, every family would have their own spin. By swapping rosemary, sage and thyme, the three essential Thanksgiving herb with turmeric, cumin or soy sauce and rock sugar, every family can have a unique roast turkey of their own. On the day of Thanksgiving, the kitchen is filled with flavorful happy air, the sweetness from the pies, the tartness from cranberry sauce, the creaminess from the sour cream in mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes. Each and every dish ties the family around the table like magic.

Besides the fabulous feast, Thanksgiving is also a great time for Christmas shopping. The day after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday in the US. It dons the best deal and longest store hour of the year, similar to the infamous annual sale in Taiwan. Major big brands open their doors to the customers before dawn and a lot of them would stay open until midnight, with the heavy discounts and great deals, a lot of families plan their Christmas or home improvement shopping around Black Friday to take advantage of this special day.

最近看到了幾本讓我非常驚艷的雜誌, 大部分是由非常小的公司甚至是個人自己掏腰包印刷的刊物。
I’ve spotted quite a few fabulous magazines and publications, most of them are independent publications from a small group of people.

1. Kinfolk

對於藝術, 美食, 及聚會有同等喜愛的三個朋友聚集了一些同好製作出Kinfolk的創刊號。最近才印刷出來的雜誌內容是紀錄不同大小的聚會。是朋友要搬家了? 是媽媽的生日? 是每個星期朋友間的聚會? Kinfolk以美麗的照片還有排版呈獻。而最主要的目的是希望能激起所有人偶爾跟朋友家人聚聚的想法。在忙碌的生活裡, 我們常常把相聚這件事看得很不重要, 可是能有時間有能力聚在一起分享美食卻是再幸福不過的事。這本雜誌融合了我的最愛 – 攝影及美食。

2. Fricote

這本法國雜誌把食物當黏土或樂高一樣製造出一些很有趣的設計。當然除了從設計觀點出發的擺盤及意念外還是有很多創意食譜。雜誌裡也會介紹很多各國不同的醬料零食及食譜, 與一般只是介紹食譜的雜誌比較的話非常嶄新也非常的有趣。雖然是一本法國雜誌, 但很開心他們的內容是法英文雙語的喔。

3. Stella

StellaMag
Stella是從丹麥來的一本雜誌。創辦的概念是集結世界各地對同一個話題的迷思或者是看法。例如最新的 Vol.2裡要尋找的是世界各地對beauty(美)的看法。除了用照片及文字的傳述, 每一期雜誌都會請來一些插畫家畫出他們對這些話題的看法。非常的有趣, 愛視覺觀感柔美感覺的朋友一定會喜歡。除了雜誌, 我也不定期的逛逛他們的部落格

4. Oh Comely

Oh Comely, 一年六期的英國雜誌, 所有愛手工創意及飲食的人看到了應該都會停下來翻一翻。我喜歡裡面不做作的食譜排版, 也喜歡所有的插畫及手作教學。很多再利用還有用不起眼的材料做出手環或卡片之類的東西。我也喜歡裡面的文字。是近來看過算非常有趣的英國雜誌。

這本由美籍韓裔的插畫家Caroline Hwang編輯,作畫,排版成的個人作品, 集合了許多美國知名以”全食, 慢食, 利用在地食材,在家開伙”出名的美食家食譜。跟Kinfolk一樣的是Caroline融合了藝術與美食, 也希望以這本薄薄的但精美又實用的書引發所有人想要多和家人朋友分享美食的態度。更棒的事, 她並不是為了賺錢而製作這本書, 所有賺來的錢都會捐給在費城的一個慈善機構 – The Food trust。我非常讚賞她的精神也認為這本書非常值得珍藏, 希望接下來還會有book 2, book 3. 誠心的推薦給你們!

maggie's harvest

Absolutely gorgeous cookbook from the famous Maggie Beer of Australia. First saw it on Terrain but found it for less on Amazon.

I’ve been seeing the Chronicle version of this book, this deluxe edition made my jaw drop. John Carrera is one thorough and patient man and this project is magnificent!

It’s finally out! I’m totally getting a copy, love this promotional trailer for the book as well, very jealous of all the wonderful farmer’s market and fresh ingredients… by the very talented Pim Techamuanvivit .

Book design is going to become much more refined and eventually turn into an art form. With all the technology we have today, printing and publishing services are suffering. To boost sales, I imagine they will all have to have some serious creative budgets to make their products more attractive than ever.

I love books and I’m guilty of becoming an iPhone Kindle reader. But for designs like these, I am totally willing to break my bank. C.S. Lewis Signature Series by designer Jason Gabbert and illustrator Antar Dayal as seen on designworklife.

Saw these on Monocle and I’m in love. Hopefully one day I will publish beautifully laid out cookbooks with food I love, great photography, and excellent illustration+typography.



I can’t wait to get this on my hand. Not only is it useful but from what I see, it’s extremely well laid out, it must be a pleasure read – The Typographic Desk Reference by Theodore Rosendorf.
